Florida’s Move Over Law Applies to All Safety Vehicles

Florida law enforcement and safety officials recently issued an important reminder about the importance of the state’s “move over” law. It requires drivers to move over when a patrol car, emergency vehicle, or tow truck is stopped on the side of a road with lights flashing. If they cannot move over safely, drivers must slow to a speed 20 mph below the posted speed limit. The law is intended to protect professionals who come to the aid of disabled drivers. “You’re literally standing a couple feet from people doing 60–70 mph; you don’t have many options,” Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Wysocky said. Officials specifically expressed concern that many Florida drivers don’t know that they must also move over when they observe flashing orange lights. Several Road Rangers and tow operators have been seriously hurt or even killed when drivers failed to obey the law. “That’s why it’s important for people to pay attention to the move over laws,” Sgt. Wysocky noted. Drivers are reminded that in addition to putting your safety at risk, failing to yield or move over can result in a fine of up to $160 and demerits on your driver’s license record. In 2012 alone, FHP issued 8,273 citations, according to the Sun Sentinel.

“Dellutri Law Firm is simply the best. The lawyers and staff all have a level of integrity and professionalism I have never experienced before. They will make you feel positive about a less than desirable time in your life. When my husband was laid off, we lost our home, were buried in debt, and to add insult to injury, the first lawyer we went to made us feel like lowlifes. It was just awful. But after hearing Mr. Dellutri on a local radio channel, I gathered up the nerve to call in and ask him a few things, especially concerning the things the previous lawyer told us. He simply said, ‘Give me a chance. I know I can help.’ And he did. I can’t say enough about this firm. They were there for us in the beginning and have been there ever since. They won’t forget you. They will answer your calls and emails. I promise you, this firm is the best.” –B.R.
