Ophthalmology GEO - FACULTY HANDBOOK

Internally (but not in official University or College of Medicine documentation), the UC Department of Ophthalmology will subdivide its faculty members who hold an academic appointment in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track into the following two subgroups: (a) Core Academic Clinical Faculty - clinical faculty members who also take supervisory staff call for emergency medical and/or surgical care of patients encountered by the residents within their scope of training and service at The University Hospital and/or the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital; and (b) Regular Academic Clinical Faculty - clinical faculty members who do not take supervisory medical and/or surgical staff call for either The University Hospital or the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Only members of the Core Academic Medical Faculty are entitled to vote on departmental issues pertaining to supervisory staff coverage of the residents on emergency call that come up from time to time in monthly meetings of the Academic Faculty. 2. Clinical teaching The current version of the College of Medicine’s ARPT Guidelines (adopted April 2017) indicates that all faculty members who hold an appointment in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track are expected to “add value to the academic unit, health system or institution beyond excellent patient care. Examples in teaching, research, scholarly activities and administrative services that add value are provide with each rank.” A sentence in an earlier paragraph states: “Active participation in the educational programs of the college, including teaching and advising medical students, residents and fellows is required.” The Department of Ophthalmology believes that clinical teaching is second only to providing patient care service as an expectation of clinical faculty members in Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track and requires clinical teaching as a condition for continued faculty appointment and reappointment. The Department of Ophthalmology considers all of the following activities to be elements of clinical teaching: lecturing to ophthalmic trainees (residents, fellows, medical students) as part of the Department’s established curricula for residents, fellows, or medical students; moderating ophthalmic conferences; presenting cases and topics at Departmental Grand Rounds; supervising ophthalmic trainees in patient evaluations in a clinic or private office; supervising residents or fellows in ophthalmic surgery; and instructing trainees in methods of ophthalmic clinical

examination, ophthalmic pathological analysis, or ophthalmic surgery methods. 3. Attendance and participation in Departmental Academic Faculty Meetings

All faculty members who hold an appointment in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track will be encouraged to attend all regular monthly meetings of the Academic Faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology. Notwithstanding this, the Department of Ophthalmology only requires every faculty member who holds an academic appointment in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track to attend four Academic Faculty Meetings per year (i.e., one faculty meeting per quarter, on average) and participate in faculty discussions and decision-making at those meetings. The extent to which a faculty member in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track participates in faculty meetings will be taken into account in decisions about academic promotion. 4. Attendance and participation in Departmental CME conferences All faculty members who hold an appointment in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track will be encouraged to attend all scheduled CME conferences of the Department of Ophthalmology. Notwithstanding this, the Department of Ophthalmology only requires every faculty member who holds an academic appointment in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track to attend one (1) Ophthalmology Grand Rounds conference per month (on average, September through June of each Academic Year) and participate in patient diagnosis and management discussions at those conferences. Faculty members will also be encouraged to attend and participate in the Department’s Annual Ophthalmological Conference and Research Symposium each Spring. The extent to which a faculty member in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track attends and participates in Departmental CME conference will be taken into account in decisions about academic promotion. 5. Administrative and/or Committee Service The Department of Ophthalmology expects all faculty members who hold an appointment in the Non-Tenure Clinical Service Track to provide administrative and/or committee service to the Department (without supplemental pay), if requested by the Chairperson of the Department,
