301 English: The changing world
Assessment will be selected from the following Achievement Standards: • AS 91472 (4 credits – external) Respond critically to specified aspect(s) of studied written text(s). • AS 91473 (4 credits – external) Respond critically to specified aspect(s) of studied visual or oral text(s). • AS 91474 (4 credits – external) Respond critically to specified aspect(s) of unfamiliar written texts. • AS 91476 (3 credits – internal) Create and deliver a fluent and coherent oral text. • AS 91479 (4 credits – internal) Develop an informed understanding of literature using critical texts. • AS91475 (6 credits – internal) Produce a selection of fluent and coherent writing which develops, sustains, and structures ideas • AS 91478 (4 credits – internal) Respond critically to significant connections across texts.
Prerequisites Level 2 English or Media Studies.
Exclusions Students can only take one Level 3 English course. Description This course examines the changing nature of literature in our ever-changing world. The last few years have witnessed the nomination of a graphic novel for the Man Booker Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature being awarded to a popular songwriter, and respected authors taking to Twitter and YouTube as serious literary mediums. Students will examine the place of literary attempts to construct new literary languages in response to cultural upheaval, before applying this lens to contemporary society and culture and then putting this into action in their own writing. Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance, with between 18 and 23 credits. The specific standards may vary by class. The English Department will discuss this with students who opt into 301 English.
NB: While English is optional at Years 12–13, students thinking about pursuing tertiary studies should bear in mind that NCEA Level 3 English is often an entry requirement into university courses – even in science-based disciplines like engineering or medicine. Students considering studying in England, Australia or the USA will need to complete Level 3 English as a university entrance requirement.
