Mechanical Engineering

Prerequisites Candidates for this course are expected to have completed the Level 2 Mechanical Engineering course successfully. Students who wish to take Level 3 Mechanical Engineering without successfully completing the Level 2 course will find the work demanding and must seek prior approval from the HoD Workshop Technologies. Description This practical course is designed so that students can be exposed to several engineering options and gives the students the opportunity to make an informed engineering career choice. Students will have the opportunity to construct a practical project that is used to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and ability in a team, backed up with a log of evidence used to develop their curriculum vitae. Visits to engineering industries is part of the course and an opportunity to do work experience is also an option. The breakdown of time allocation for this course equates to about 80% in a workshop environment, and 20% in a design and theory classroom.

Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3, with all 18 credits internally assessed. The following Unit Standards will be assessed: • US 32054 (7 credits – internal) Produce components by performing engineering machining operations in MaPS environment. • US32056 (7 credits – internal) Perform fabrication operations in MaPS environment. • US32052 (4 credits – internal) Demonstrate knowledge of, and produce, development drawings and patterns for three- dimensional objects in MaPS environment.

All assessments use Industry Training Organisation-designed and moderated (Competenz) assessment material.

NB: University Entrance will not be available via this course.
