Materials Technology
Prerequisites Students are expected to have successfully completed the Level 2 Materials Technology course. Students wishing to take Level 3 Materials Technology without completing the Level 2 course must seek prior approval from the HoD Workshop Technologies, as the work requires a high level of independence, safe practice, design thinking, and practical capability. Description Materials Technology is a project-based course that builds on the design, development, and practical skills established in Level 2. Students select their own project in response to a genuine design need or opportunity, working within practical constraints such as budget, time, workshop space, available tools, materials, and safety requirements. Students work with multiple stakeholders to investigate, design, model, manufacture, and evaluate a technological outcome. They develop a substantial evidence-based portfolio that documents their research, stakeholder feedback, conceptual design, testing, material selection, complex procedures, prototype development, and evaluation of fitness for purpose in the broadest sense. This course is well suited to students considering university pathways who want to develop a strong foundation in technological thinking, design decision-making, problem-solving, and evidence- based project development.
Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance, with 4 of the 22 credits externally assessed by digital report submission and the remaining 18 credits internally assessed. It is a University Entrance approved subject. The following Achievement Standards will be assessed: • AS 91610 (6 credits – internal) Develop a conceptual design considering fitness for purpose in the broadest sense. • AS 91611 (6 credits – internal) Develop a prototype considering fitness for
purpose in the broadest sense. • AS 91620 (6 credits – internal)
Implement complex procedures to integrate parts using resistant materials to make a specified product. • AS 91617 (4 credits – external) – reading credits Undertake a critique of a technological outcome's design.
