Materials Technology

Prerequisites Candidates for this course are expected to have completed the Level 2 Materials Technology course successfully. Students who wish to take Level 3 Materials Technology without successfully completing the Level 2 course will find the work demanding and must seek prior approval from the HoD Workshop Technologies. Description This course involves identifying a client with a design issue or need and, in association with the client, investigating, designing, modelling and manufacturing a solution to satisfy the need. The breakdown of time allocation for this course equates to about 60% in a workshop environment, and 40% in a design and theory classroom. Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance, with 4 of the 20 credits externally assessed by portfolio submission, and the remaining 16 credits internally assessed.

The following Achievement Standards will be assessed: • AS 91622 (4 credits – internal) Implement complex procedures to make a specified product using a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine. • AS 91611 (6 credits – internal) Develop a prototype considering fitness for

purpose in the broadest sense. • AS 91620 (6 credits – internal)

Implement complex procedures to integrate parts using resistant materials to make a specified product. • AS 91617 (4 credits – external) Undertake a critique of a technological outcome's design.
