Year 13
Prerequisites Satisfactory achievement in Level 2 History, especially in research, communication and interpretation. Students who have not studied History will be eligible to be admitted with satisfactory performances in Level 2 English and/ or Geography by approval of the HoD. Description The course will follow the theme of 'Revolution from Below', focusing on the role people play in looking to change their culture, society and nation. Choice is given to students to assist in developing a programme that best suits their aspirations. The course analyses: • Nationalistic aspirations • Social history, and the impact of people changing society The topics taught could include: • The Cold War • The Treaty of Waitangi • The Holocaust • The American Civil War • 9/11 • WWI Generals The Level 3 programme will also offer the choice to research topics of personal interest.
Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3. There will be approximately 25 credits on offer, which will be selected from the range of following Achievement Standards: • AS 91434 (5 credits – internal) Research an historical event or place of significance to New Zealanders, using primary and secondary sources. • AS 91435 (5 credits – internal) Analyse an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders. • AS 91436 (4 credits – external) Analyse evidence relating to an historical event of significance to New Zealanders. • AS 91437 (5 credits – internal) Analyse different perspectives of a contested event of significance to New Zealanders. • AS 91438 (6 credits – external) Analyse the causes and consequences of a significant historical event. • AS 91439 (6 credits – external) Analyse a significant historical trend and the force(s) that influenced it. The internally assessed Achievement Standards involve historical research and communicating the major findings. The end-of-year examination will assess the external achievement standards. The main focus of the examination is the assessment of resource interpretation, content knowledge and writing ability. Students will also be able to sit the NZQA Scholarship History examination.
