General Mathematics and Statistics

Prerequisites Reaching a minimum of Secure at Stage 3 in Year 11 Algebra Prep or Statistics Prep is required for direct entry. All students must discuss with HOD Mathematics for approval as the pathway does not contribute to Level 3. Description This course is designed for students wishing to continue their quantitative studies and gain some credits at NCEA Level 2 in both Mathematics and Statistics. It will have a practical and applied focus, serving students wishing to enter professional apprenticeship type courses after Christ’s College. It will not be to a level that will allow students to enter and study Level 3 Calculus or Level 3 Statistics. It will allow entry into Level 3 Mathetmatics and Statistics Applications course.

Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 2, with all content assessed internally. The following Achievement Standards will be assessed: • AS91256 (2 credits – internal) Apply co-ordinate geometry methods in solving problems • AS01258 (2 credits – internal) Apply sequences and series in solving problems • AS 91259 (3 credits – internal) Apply trigonometric relationships in solving problems • AS 91260 (2 credits – internal) Apply network methods in solving problems • AS91264 (4 credits – internal) Use statistical methods to make an inference • AS 91265 (3 credits – internal) Conduct an experiment to investigate a situation using statistical methods

Star Programme An opportunity for students to enrol in a special Stage One university course, where they complete the MATH 198 syllabus. The lectures are held two days a week after College classes have finished.
