Year 13
Prerequisites Students considering this course should be able to perform on an instrument at the equivalent level of five years of instrumental music lessons. Students should also have literacies in music technology, ear training, score reading, and music theory. It is highly recommended that students have already completed Level 2 Music. Students who commit to regular individual music lessons typically flourish in this course.

Students may elect to study towards an additional external examination in ear training or score reading. Students will select from the following standards to create a course between 20-24 credits • 91416 (8 credits – internal) Perform two programmes of music as a featured soloist. • 91417 (4 credits – internal) Perform a programme of music as a featured soloist on a second instrument. • 91418 (4 credits – internal) Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing two substantial pieces of music as a member of a group. • 91419 (8 credits – internal) Communicate musical intention by composing three original pieces of music. • 91421 (4 credits – external) Demonstrate understanding of harmonic and tonal conventions in a range of musical scores. • AS 91423 (4 credits – external) – reading & writing credits Examine the influence of context on a musical work. • AS 91425 (6 credits) – reading credits Research a music topic. • 91849 (8 credits – internal) Compose three original songs that express imaginative thinking.
Description We welcome all genres of music and all
instruments in this course. All students in Level 3 Music study the disciplines of individual and group music performance, composition, ear training, theory, and musicology in a mixture of internal and external assessment opportunities. This practical course is performance based. Students have significant discretionary time to build up portfolios of compositions and performances. Students are encouraged to select an overarching project, for instance development of a band, chamber ensemble, or compositional project. The student is then assessed on this activity individually or collaboratively. Students in level 3 music typically perform frequently at College events. Assessment The course contributes towards NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance, with, on average, 20 to 26 credits. Composition and performance portfolios are assessed against NCEA internal achievement and unit standards. Through the year, there are frequent formative checkpoints where we workshop and critique work.
NB: Only Achievement Standard assessment counts towards University Entrance in this course.
