Workshop Technology
Year 13
Building construction
Prerequisites Candidates for this course are expected to have completed the Level 2 Building Construction course successfully. Students who wish to take Level 3 Building and Construction without successfully completing the Level 2 course will find the work demanding and must seek prior approval from the HoD Workshop Technologies. Description This course follows a similar format to the Year 12 course where student ability and knowledge of a wide variety of building and construction tools and machinery are assessed. The skills learnt lead to a career in the building and construction industry. Typically, students will work in small groups outside during the dry-weather terms on small-scale construction projects (fence, deck, playground equipment, small shed). During the winter months, students are required to complete individually built furniture items. The breakdown of time allocation for this course equates to about 80% in a workshop environment, and 20% in a design and theory classroom.
Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3, with all 18 credits internally assessed. The following Unit Standards will be assessed: • US 29677 (2 credits – internal) Follow safe workplace practices, and contribute to a health and safety culture, in a BCATS environment. • US 29678 (4 credits – internal) Demonstrate knowledge of, select, and use materials for a Stage 3 BCATS project. • US 29680 (5 credits – internal) Communicate and work collaboratively in a Stage 3 BCATS project. • US 29681 (3 credits – internal) Measure and calculate for a Stage 3 BCATS project. • US 29682 (4 credits – internal) Select, use, and maintain tools, equipment and machinery for a Stage 3 BCATS project.
