Materials Technology

Prerequisites Completion of a Diploma Prep course in either Materials Technology, Wood Construction, or Metal Construction, reaching at least Stage 3, is strongly recommended for students wishing to study Materials Technology at NCEA Level 2. Students must also have demonstrated safe and responsible workshop practice. Students not meeting these requirements should speak with the HoD Workshop Technologies to discuss the suitability of enrolment in this course. Description Materials Technology is a project-based course in which students design, develop, make, and evaluate a purposeful, student-led technological outcome. Students respond to a design context by researching needs and opportunities, gathering stakeholder feedback, developing conceptual ideas, and making informed decisions about materials, tools, processes, and construction methods. Using both traditional and digital workshop technologies, students implement advanced procedures to produce a high-quality prototype. They test, trial, and refine their work to ensure it is fit for purpose, while considering sustainability, material selection, waste, product lifecycle, and responsible use of resources. Students demonstrate their understanding through a substantial evidence-based portfolio that includes research, conceptual development,

testing, practical implementation, evaluation, and justification of design and manufacturing decisions. This course is well suited to students considering university pathways who want to develop a strong foundation in technological thinking, design decision-making, problem-solving, and evidence- based project development. Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 2, with 4 of the 22 credits externally assessed by digital report submission, and the remaining 18 credits internally assessed. It is a University Entrance approved subject. The following Achievement Standards will be assessed: • AS 91344 (6 credits – internal) Implement advanced procedures. • AS 91356 (6 credits – internal) Develop a conceptual design for an outcome. • AS 91357 (6 credits – internal) Undertake effective development to make and trial a prototype. • AS91363 (4 credits – external) Demonstrate understanding of sustainability in design.
