Ottawa’s lack of ambulances and para- medics is taking its toll on the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR). Paramedic response times in the UCPR have been on the rise since 2015 when the population was under 90,000. That year, the average response time for the highest priority calls was under eight minutes. In 2022, the most recent year with available data, response times were averaging more than 11 minutes for a population of under 97,000. Response time targets are measured on six categories of patient. They include five levels of the Canadian Triage Accuity Scale (CTAS) ranging from level five, which is considered non-urgent, to level 1, a question of life or death. The sixth category is for sudden cardiac arrest. The UCPR response time target for CTAS 1 is eight minutes, CTAS 2 to 5 is 16 minutes, and the target for sudden cardiac arrest calls is six minutes. Since 2021, paramedics planned to hit their target numbers for CTAS 1 calls 48 per cent of the time, CTAS 2 calls 90 per cent of the time, CTAS 3 to 5 70 per cent of the time, and sudden cardiac arrest calls 40 per cent of the time. (In 2021, the planned percentage for CTAS 3 to 5 calls was adjusted down from 90 per cent, a target they failed to hit every year since 2015.) 8IJMF6$13TQBSBNFEJDTIJUUIFJSUBSHFU for CTAS 3 and 4 in 2022, they fell short in every other category, missing their target number by 10 per cent on the most urgent calls (38 per cent), 12 per cent on the second most urgent (78 per cent), and four per cent on sudden cardiac arrest calls (36 per cent). CTAS 5 target times, the least urgent calls, were just one per cent short of planned performance in the region. Ottawa to blame? «On est rendu à une augmentation de 40% de demandes à la banque alimen- taire et ce n’est pas nécessairement à cause de la COVID, c’est à cause de l’inflation», s’inquiète le maire de Hawkesbury au sujet des itinérants. Robert Lefebvre indique que la Banque alimentaire centrale d’Hawkesbury a vu bondir le nombre de personnes qu’elle servait. La clientèle est passée d’environ 450 personnes par mois à 700 citoyens dont 250 enfants. «Alors, la banque alimentaire ne peut pas continuer à être le seul recours», a suggéré le maire. Imagine almost every street, veranda and balcony in a quiet village lulled to sleep by the extraordinary sounds of talented musicians playing for free. This was the 2023 edition of the Vankeek Hill Porchfest, which enchanted and bewitched an entire village on July 15. For the event, the organizing committee invited some 20 musicians to perform at 15 different venues, bringing happiness to the citizens and visitors of Vankleek Hill. “We like it a lot, there are several musical styles and good musicians in the area,” said .JDIFM-FNJFVYi&WFSZPOFQBSUJDJQBUFTJO the party and the atmosphere is really good, and it’s free.” With beaming faces, chairs and stools under their arms, people weaved in and out

Mais vendredi, ça serait du blues car beaucoup de monde me demande du blues. C’est une chose à laquelle je vais commencer à penser après que ce festival va être fini», a assuré M. Paquette.

La Ville de Hawkesbury a tenu le 29 juillet dernier la 5 e édition de son festival Western à la Place des Pionniers. «On aime essayer de divertir les gens avec toutes sortes de choses. Il y a eu le festival multiculturel avec différents types de musique, ça c’est un autre style de musique», a expliqué le conseiller municipal Yves Paquette, du comité organisateur. Long ago, Nathalie Frenière used to dream of being an artist. Now her works are part of a virtual art gallery set up in Florence, Italy. “When I was young, my dream was to be a painter,” Frenière said during an interview at her home studio in Vankleek Hill. As a child and during her teen years, Frenière would spend many days visiting around various museums and art galleries. Her father had a collection of paintings and he did encourage her artistic temperament, but his advice for her was to pursue a career in commercial art. “So I was a graphic artist in Montréal,” she said. “I used to work for Disney then.” Her commercial assignments work for the House of Mouse had her doing illustrations of all the major Disney characters for use as art prints, T-shirt designs and other types of commercial spinoffs. By the time she was 30, Frenière was the director of a commercial arts studio in Montréal, until there was a change in the economy and she was laid off. She went back to school to study computer infographics and found employment in that field. But commercial art was not her passion. After a while she decided to devote herself fulltime to her creative works. First she went to Paris to study the Impressionists and then returned home to begin her new career as a full-time artist.

“My style is more semi-abstract lands- capes,” she said. “Very modern.” Her study of impressionist art, she explai- ned, helped her focus on the element of emotion in the subjects and colours of her paintings. In between working on her own pieces, she now helps mentor others. At one point she had as many as 40 students studying with her. Virtual gallery Over the past years, Frenière has had her work accepted for display in a variety of venues, including a five-year show at the Ward Nasse Gallery in New York City, and a show at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Soccer Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “I have been showing and selling my pain- tings for five years,” she said, estimating the number of her completed works about 500 pieces of various sizes. “I do a lot of big pieces,” she said, adding that landscapes are her preference. “I do a lot of sky scenes,” she said, smi- ling. “My favourite colour, of course, is blue.” Her latest triumph now will be her first European gallery appearance in August, one
which takes advantage of cyber technology. Several of her pieces will be on display with the Art Armando Xhomo Gallery in Florence, Italy as part of a virtual exhibition hosted by the gallery. She and fellow franco-ontarian artist Lise B.L. Goulet will present Sky, Land and Sea (Cielo, Terra e Mare), with the support of a grant from the Ontario Art Council and the Fondation Clément-Berini Foundation. “For me, it’s very exciting,” she said. “It’s kind of a dream come true.” Later in the year, Frenière will fly to Italy, bringing with her 25 of her works for an on-site display at the Florence gallery. Altogether, this year, Frenière’s work will be on public display in at least four locations, the others including galleries in Toronto, Ottawa, and Québec City. While she expects that she will be occu- pied with meeting and talking to patrons of the Art Armando Xhomo Gallery while she is in Florence, Frenière is certain she will find inspiration during her sojourn in Italy to guide her choice of subjects for future paintings. “Travelling is important for artists,” she said. “It helps one meet and experience new things.”

Does the warm weather make you want to eat outdoors? Whether you want to indulge in a meal for one or share good food surrounded by loved ones, here are some tips to make your picnic a success. • Keep it simple. «Succès incroyable» «Le tournoi était pour amasser de l’argent pour le Club de natation Orca et aussi pour organiser une journée jeunesse», a indiqué la conseillère municipale, Johanne Portelance. M. Paquette a souligné que l’événement a été couronné de succès. «Je suis fier de dire qu’on a eu au-delà de 80 joueurs de golf. Ça fait beaucoup d’années que j’organise le tournoi de golf, je n’ai jamais vu autant de joueurs de golf participer à une telle activité», a-t-il admis. Le conseiller a poursuivi en précisant : «Normalement après qu’on a 50 joueurs, on appelle ça un très beau tournoi, on appelle ça un succès. Mais le tournoi du Maire de cette année a été un succès incroyable. Je suis très fier d’avoir fait partie de ça», a réitéré le conseiller. Il a remercié tous ceux qui, de près ou de loin, ont contribué à la réussite de l’événement. Un chèque de 4000 $ a été délivré au Club de natation Orca, en marge de la séance publique du conseil municipal.
Le Tournoi de golf au profit de la Jeunesse désormais appelé ‘’Tournoi du Maire’’ a amassé plus de 25 000 $ durant les quatre dernières années à Hawkesbury. En présentant le bilan à la réunion du conseil, le conseiller municipal, Yves Paquette, a déclaré que le montant a été distribué aux organismes sportifs à but non lucratif de la région. Le premier tournoi a permis de mobiliser des fonds pour l’Asso- ciation de baseball mineur et le club de soccer Pro 17. Le deuxième tournoi a été organisé afin de remettre de l’argent à l’Association de basketball mineur, les Titans. La troisième compétition s’est déroulée pour pouvoir aider le Club de patinage artistique de Hawkesbury et la quatrième était au profit du Club de natation Orca de Hawkesbury. Ce dernier tournoi devrait se tenir avant la COVID-19, mais n’a eu lieu qu’en juin 2023

La Fondation de l’Hôpital général de Hawkesbury et district (HGH) et The Beer Store invitent les citoyens à apporter leurs bouteilles vides dans le magasin à Hawkesbury d’ici le 27 août. L’objectif avoué est d’aider l’hôpital à avoir plus de services spécialisés en soins de santé. 100% des fonds amassés en magasin seront remis à la Fondation HGH. MRS BARBARA RUTHERFORD The family of Barbara Rutherford would like to thank everyone, for the love and support shown to us during the loss of our mother. The celebration of life held at Knox Presbyterian Church was filled with wonderful music, prayers, and spoken words that warmed our hearts as we remembered her life. A thank you to Jade Garden for the care put into the flower arrangements. We would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to Reverend James Douglas and the congregation of the church for their kindness and support. Mom always felt truly at home within the church and surrounded by its members. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Dandy, Mrs. Mode and the Ladies Aid of Knox Presbyterian Church for the scrumptious delights provided at the reception, at the Vankleek Hill Curling Club, following the celebration of life. A personal and heartfelt thanks is extended to Lisa and Mark of Hillcrest Funeral Home. Your kindness, compassion and support during these past few months has been greatly appreciated. Losing Barbara has been hard on all of us and she will be missed forever, but knowing that the community, family and friends are there for us has helped us through this challenging time.
