Expanded Veterans Service Locations Beginning in January 2023, the Veterans Services staff, in partnership with other local veteran agencies, began hosting office hours at numerous locations throughout the county. The staff of Service Officers and Benefit Assistants are now available for in-person consultations downtown at the Allegheny County Courthouse, Pittsburgh Vet Center in the South Hills, RMU Center for Veterans & Military Families in Moon, Veterans Place in Homewood, and Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland.
prepared for the 2023 municipal primary election. On May 16, 6,215 poll workers opened the 1,324 polls across the county for the primary municipal election. About 154,000 residents voted in-person while another approximately 80,000 submitted mail-in or absentee ballots. Pre-canvassing of the mail-in and absentee ballots concluded at 1:00 PM that day with results posted online at 8:00:28 PM; in-person results began posting shortly before 9:00 PM. During the return board process, staff researched over 1,200 provisional ballots and tabulated a record number of nearly 70,000 write-in votes — culminating in 280 qualified write-in nominees and 184 claimed nominations. The Elections Division conducted a special election for the General Assembly’s 21st Legislative District on September 19, with just over 4,000 mail-in and absentee ballots and 11,199 total ballots cast. Mail-in and absentee results were posted online at 8:00:11 PM and in-person (unofficial) tabulations were completed shortly before 10:00 PM. The fourth election of the year was the general municipal election, held on November 7. County staff pre-canvassed about 113,000 mail-in and absentee ballots beginning at 7:00 AM on Election Day. All 1,324 precincts opened with a record 6,894 poll workers, including 187 student poll workers. By connecting with local high school government, social studies, and civics teachers, students were encouraged to participate on Election Day to receive community service hours or payment.
Special and Municipal Election Successes The Elections Division conducted four elections during 2023, beginning with a special election for the 32nd, 34th, and 35th legislative districts.
