Giving Back and Setting Goals HOLIDAY SENTIMENTS AND NEW YEAR’S WISHES

Season’s greetings! I hope you are all as excited as I am for the holidays and the fresh start of a new year. Laura and I have started alternating a trip on Thanksgiving and Christmas each year — Lake Tahoe is one of our favorite locations — and it’s always great to have an opportunity to slow down and get away. This is a season of giving. Though I’ve mentioned it before, I’d like to draw attention to my foundation, Plastic Surgery from the Heart. People pursue plastic surgery for both cosmetic and reconstructive reasons, and people with disfigurements are often those

Once the holidays are through, we turn our attention to the new year. I spend a great deal of time every year setting goals and planning out the next 12 months. To hold myself accountable and later evaluate my success, I always write them down. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I achieved most of my goals for 2020 and 2021. But now that our office has expanded, we have more responsibilities than ever before, and we mustn’t grow complacent. Though our physical footprint won’t be expanding in 2022 (we’ve done quite enough of that for the moment!), we do want to continue

least able to access care. Scarring, congenital conditions, and other severe disfigurements can have a monumental impact on a person’s quality of life, physical health, self-confidence, and ability to create social ties. Many plastic surgeons travel internationally to help people in low-income countries. That’s an honorable endeavor, but some people need the same types of services right here in our own community. I started Plastic Surgery from the Heart several years ago to give back and create a direct, local impact. It allows all of us here, as an office, to serve others and see the results of our actions in real-time. If you know someone who could use our help, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We will consider every candidate for surgery. If you’re able to donate time or resources to the foundation, we’d also love to hear from you! You can send any foundation inquiries to Leticia@clinicforplasticsurgery.com.

growing in other ways. Namely, we want to continue expanding the number of patients we can treat and our positive impact on the community. Our ultimate goal is to help as many people as possible in as many ways as we can. Setting goals and benchmarks for the new year will help us stay on track and continue this important journey. I hope that you and your family have a safe and joyous holiday season. Let’s all enter this new year with hope and a commitment to support one another in more ways than ever before. Here’s to new beginnings and better things ahead! –Dr. Sam Sukkar

3 Things to Include in Your Post-Workout Meal

There’s plenty of emphasis lately on what you should eat before a workout, but not so much about after a workout. What you eat after exercising is just as essential for maximizing your workout’s effectiveness. After intensive exercise, many of us will feel hungry and turn to just about anything to satiate our hunger, but the wrong food could negate the effects of our workouts. During your workout, you will use up your body’s carbohydrates and the glucose stored in your muscles. A proper post-workout meal, including the right fluids, is necessary to replenish these nutrients. When preparing the perfect post-workout meal, there are three areas you should focus on. PROTEIN Including protein in your post-workout meal is important to repair and build muscle. Muscle tissues get broken down during exercise, and protein helps put them back together stronger than before. Eggs, tuna, chicken, and Greek yogurt are great sources of protein and should be implemented into your post-workout meal. CARBS Carbs are essential for replenishing your body’s glycogen levels. Glycogen is the fuel that helps keep us moving and active. If you feel exhausted and

hungry after a workout, it’s usually your body telling you that your glycogen levels are low. Including carbs such as sweet potatoes, rice, oatmeal, pasta, and chocolate milk in your post- workout meal will help you feel energized and ready to continue with your day.

FLUIDS You should always drink water while working out and continue to do so after your exercise is complete. Water regulates your body temperature, lubricates your joints, and transports nutrients throughout your body. In one hour of exercise, your body can lose more than a quarter of its water. Continue to drink water or other hydrating drinks after your workout to replenish your missing fluids. Lastly, avoid having a giant fast-food meal after exercising. There are plenty of options for preparing a truly beneficial post-workout meal, so find what makes you feel your best and what you enjoy most and run with it.

A Defined, More Youthful Jawline

Made Possible With Kybella

outstanding results, they’re surgical procedures that require a recovery period. Kybella is an injectable treatment that can reduce unwanted fatty tissue to reveal a more defined jawline should you be a candidate, without the need for surgery. Kybella contains deoxycholic acid, which occurs naturally in the human body to metabolize fat. When injected into the skin, Kybella destroys the outer membrane of fat cells, leaving them vulnerable to absorption by your body’s natural processes. The excess fat in the area will slowly disappear, resulting in a firmer jawline. Even better, the fat cells don’t come back. If you’ve ever had any other injectable treatment, the process with Kybella is similar. The procedure involves 20–30 small injections around the chin. If you choose, we can administer a topical anesthetic to increase comfort. The process

takes less than 30 minutes, and results appear in 4–6 weeks. Most patients need 3–6 monthly treatments for optimal results. Any side effects should be minimal, but they can include swelling, redness, bruising, or numbness. If you experience any of these reactions, they’re normal and generally do not last more than a week. Most patients see minimal adverse reactions and continue their work and social lives uninterrupted. Best of all, 82% of patients who receive Kybella report significantly improved satisfaction with their appearance. Our providers have years of experience with cosmetic injectable treatments and are proud to bring the most innovative procedures to our patients. If you think Kybella might be right for you, call our office today to schedule a consultation. It’s your first step to incredible results.

A defined jawline and chin can make you look younger and more attractive, no matter your age. Unfortunately, as we grow older, this area loses its definition. You might form sagging skin, a double chin, or jowls, all of which prematurely age you and can affect your self-confidence. It’s a widespread problem — a study by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery found that 67% of respondents are bothered by excess fat on their chin or neck. In the past, if you wanted to treat your jowls or a double chin, your only options were a facelift or liposuction. While these options produce

Avoid Fake Recipes Some TikTok creators film satirical, “clickbait” videos making outrageous dishes that were never tested or even intended to be eaten. The best way to avoid this is by paying close attention to the video. Is the creator using ingredients not normally put together or that have conflicting tastes? Are they making exaggerated comments or facial expressions over a simple dish? If you still aren’t sure after questioning the video, then check the creator’s account for other content they’ve made. If they regularly make other satirical videos, you can probably assume their newest viral hit is also fake. Sometimes looking at the comments will help, but the comments could also play into the joke. WHY DO YOUR EARS POP ON FLIGHTS?

Airplane Ears THE SCIENCE BEHIND YOUR EARS POPPING ON FLIGHTS

When it comes to flying on an airplane, you can avoid cramped legs by upgrading to first class or catch a view by picking the window seat. However, there’s no getting around your ears popping during takeoff and landing. Believe it or not, there is a scientific explanation behind this common annoyance. As you read this, you’re likely not on an airplane, and the air pressure on either side of your eardrums is equal. Air is currently passing right on through your eustachian tube, a narrow passage that leads from your middle ear cavity to your pharynx and allows for pressure to be equalized on each side of your eardrums. When you’re in flight on an airplane, air pressure is not equal. During both ascent and descent, your eardrums stretch to try to adapt to the changes. In order to equalize the pressure, your eustachian tube needs to open and close. When it does, your ears pop!

can lead to ear pain and even loss in hearing, especially if your ears don’t pop.

In this case, you may need to make an effort to get your eustachian tube to open by yawning, talking, or swallowing. Sucking on a piece of candy, swallowing some water, or chewing gum may also help! One of the best things you can do is make sure you are not sleeping as the airplane takes off or lands because your eustachian tube isn’t able to open and close normally. If you commonly struggle with congestion or sore ears on flights, taking a nasal decongestant before you board may ensure that your eustachian tube is not blocked. If your hearing and ears do not return to normal shortly after the flight, be sure to schedule an appointment to see your health care professional as soon as possible.

Usually, the ear popping is irritating but nothing more. However, in rare cases, the pressure
