Briefing Frontwave Credit Union Member Newsletter | First Quarter 2021 Five Tips for Financial Fitness in the New Year

If you’re like a lot of people, you may have set New Year’s resolutions to improve your physical fitness. But have you thought about your financial fitness? Whether you’re just starting out or already well established, having a sound financial plan is key to achieving many of your dreams. The tips below can help you get started on the right track for financial fitness in the New Year. 1. Make a budget. Before you can work on your financial goals, you have to know where you stand now. A budget is a great way to do that. Start by adding up your monthly income. Then list of all your monthly expenses. Now subtract those expenses from your income. If the number is positive, great! You’re already on your way to saving for your goals. Got a negative number? Look for ways to cut back. Do you really need that $5 latte every morning? Could you cut the cord from cable? Small savings can really add up — and help you reach your goals. 2. Create an emergency fund. An unexpected expense or loss of income can really throw you off track.

4.Use credit wisely. Loans and credit cards can be helpful tools, if you use them correctly. Shop around for the best rates and terms. Always pay your bills on time, and pay more than the minimum due on credit cards. Try not to carry a balance that’s more than 30% of your credit limit. 5.Do regular financial checkups. A budget is great — if you stick to it. Compare what you’re spending to your budget often. Make sure you’re on track. Also be sure to monitor your bank accounts and credit cards regularly. Report any suspicious transactions right away.

Prepare ahead by setting aside a small amount of each paycheck, aiming to build up 3-6 months’ worth of living expenses squirreled away for a rainy day (or new brakes on your car, as the case may be). 3.Set SMART financial goals. Whether you want to buy a house, pay for your child’s college tuition or save for retirement, the key to reaching your goals is to break them down so they’re Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, you might set a goal to contribute 5% of your annual salary to your 401k, TSP or other retirement account by the end of the year.

ways to safely deliver personal finance education to the thousands of new Marines who came through the Marine Corps Recruit Depot this year. And of course, our frontline Dream Makers showed up in a big way to ensure safe and continued service to our Members throughout the year. So what’s on the horizon for 2021? I announced at the beginning of last year that our major focus would be on Operational Excellence. And we did strive to generate efficiencies and streamline processes. But with the curve balls thrown at us by the coronavirus pandemic, we may not have gotten quite as far as we’d hoped. So, that work will continue throughout 2021 as we seek to further improve and enhance our products and services and eliminate Member friction points. Our goal to provide you with an exceptional experience and be the best place you’ve ever banked remains steadfast. We’ve got some exciting plans to make that happen in the works, and I can’t wait for you to see them brought to life. Another big task for all of us this year is to VOTE in the upcoming Board Election! We have ten candidates running for three positions on the Board of Directors and another four candidates running for three positions on the Supervisory Committee. You can get to know them on our website. So that, when the polls open in late February, you’ll be ready to select the candidates you think will do the best job representing you and guiding the credit union toward an even brighter future in service to our Membership. Thanks for your loyalty in 2020, and here’s to making 2021 the best year yet to be a Frontwave Member!

So when you asked for an easier way to dispute incorrect or suspicious transactions, we came up with a way for you to do it right inside online banking! Now when you click on a transaction, you’ll see a “Help” link. Simply click the link, follow the instructions and we’ll get things sorted out. You can find step-by-step instructions, including instructions for mobile web and the iOS app, in our Digital Banking Help Center. Any other feedback for us? We want to hear it! The next time you get a survey from us, we really appreciate you taking a few minutes to tell us how you feel. Thanks for your Membership!

Bill Birnie, President/CEO Notes from the CE0

Happy New Year! Like many of you, I’m glad to welcome in a fresh new year and say goodbye to 2020. There’s no doubt it was a tough year for many. We struggled at times ourselves with staffing challenges and temporary closures. But 2020 wasn’t all doom and gloom. There were a number of bright spots here at Frontwave — like our ability to help over 200 local businesses obtain the funds they needed to stay afloat via the Paycheck Protection Program, being named both San Diego’s Best Credit Union and Best Mortgage Company by San Diego Reader magazine, and last but not least, being recognized as the Best Bank in the Morongo Basin! Our Dream Makers also pulled together to deliver everyday successes — for example, pivoting our local in-person financial seminars to online virtual workshops, which are still going strong! Check out page 3 to see what’s on tap for this quarter. Our Military Relations team also adapted to find creative Annual Meeting Join us Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 5 pm at Frontwave Headquarters to hear about the state of the credit union from our Board of Directors and to review the annual report.
