JULY 2018

AN ANNA MARIA ADVENTURE Our Annual Family Reunion Trip

E very year in late June, my wife, kids, and I take a trip and rent out a condo on the coast of Anna Maria island. Ever since my parents won a week-long condo rental there in a charity raffle, just months after the birth of my son Noah (who is now 15 years old), it’s been our annual summer vacation getaway. Over the years, the annual trip has evolved and changed, but it’s still consistently one of my favorite experiences of the entire year. Today, it’s become more of a family reunion than anything else. Between my in-laws joining us and my own parents coming down from Chicago, there can be anywhere from 10–25 people there, depending on who can make the trip. But as packed and hectic as that may sound, it’s really a low-key kind of deal. The island isn’t one of those classic Florida destinations packed with activities, 25-story rentals, and thousands of people ambling around. The long, sandy beach is pretty much just that — a beach — dotted with a couple of quaint little restaurants and people lounging in the sunshine. So, it gives everybody an opportunity to just hang out and talk to one another. It’s the perfect opportunity to reconnect. By now, the routine is pretty familiar. We wake up when we feel like it, eat some breakfast, and then usually head down to the beach to bob in the water for an hour or two in the mid-afternoon. Then we waste away the hours just chatting and

meandering about, doing whatever we feel like. But every evening, well before the sun goes down, we drag our chairs and drinks out onto the beach to catch the invariably gorgeous sunsets as a family. Call me sentimental, but the sunsets are definitely my favorite part of the beach. It’s just a nice time, laughing and talking with some of the most important people in my life, bathed in the amber glow of the fading sunlight. Every once in a while, we’ll get together and do something a little more ambitious. Some of these excursions, like snorkeling or deep- sea fishing trips, have gone a lot better than others. Once, before we had our own boat, everyone convinced me that it was an amazing idea to rent a pontoon boat and drive everybody out near the intercoastal waterway. Problem was, I’d never driven any kind of boat in my life. So there we are, 12 people packed onto this boat, cruising slowly out toward the open ocean. I’m full of anxiety, but everyone keeps saying “you’re doing great — keep going!” Suddenly, I find myself turning the corner of the island, and these enormous waves start crashing over the boat, throwing us wildly back and forth. I turned around pretty quickly at that point. Now that I’ve got a lot more boat-hours under my belt and know what I’m doing, I can say that I would never attempt that trip now. Instead, we take our new Jet Skis, getting steadily more adventurous every time we use them.

I always return from the trip totally refreshed, feeling grateful to have such a fun, close family who actually enjoys spending time together. And though I’ll definitely miss those Jet Skis as I head back into the clinic, it’s always a welcome opportunity to get back to my wonderful patients and the work I love to do.

THESE MALLS WERE MADE FOR WALKING

The Exercise Venue That Will Keep You Cool and Fit

If you’re young at heart and looking to stay (or get) in shape this summer, consider taking a trip to the mall. No, not to pick up some hot new exercise product or dietary supplement, but to walk a few laps. Safe and convenient, “mall walking” has become one of the biggest trends in senior fitness. Cool in the Summer, Warm in the Winter This time of year, heatstroke can be a real concern when exercising outside. But that doesn’t mean you have to be a homebody. Because malls are spacious and climate- controlled, they make great year-round walking venues, especially when summer temperatures spike. You don’t even need to put on sunscreen! Rest Stops Abound While the average American shopping center isn’t as scenic as the Appalachian Trail, they are far more convenient. Replete with bathrooms, cool drinking water, and plenty

of benches, the mall lets you focus on exercising and removes all of the “what ifs?” that come with aging. Most malls are also outfitted with EMT kits in the event of a medical emergency. Squeeze in Some Shopping It is still a mall, after all. Why not check a few items off your shopping list or reward yourself with a new pair of sneakers? Getting things done as you exercise makes the experience that much more rewarding. Just remember not to overdo it. Carrying too many shopping bags can place undue stress on your back — and your wallet.

have put together official groups to stride together. Your local mall may already open early to accommodate walkers. So if you’re looking to make friends in an active, fun-loving community, do some research. Chances are there’s a mall-walking club near you!

You Won’t Be Alone Today, malls are the second-most

popular places to walk in America, after neighborhoods. Mall walking has become so big that many communities and senior living centers

Since we learn to walk during the earliest stages of our lives, it’s reasonable to assume that it’s a simple bodily function. However, walking is one of the most complex biomechanical activities we perform on a daily basis. It requires the use of multiple muscle groups, tendons, ligaments, and bones, all working together to get you from one step to the next. At the base of all these components is the plantar fascia, a weblike ligament connecting the heel to the ball of the foot. The condition that occurs when that tissue is inflamed is called plantar fasciitis. According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), about 10 percent of all Americans will suffer from plantar fasciitis at some point in their lifetime. While it is most common among those over 40 and extremely active people, it can happen to anyone. When it does, it can cause excruciating heel pain. Plantar fasciitis can also lead to secondary injuries throughout your body. Your heel absorbs stress with every step you take, so if you are not walking naturally, complications can occur all the way up to your neck.

Physical therapy can be extremely helpful in relieving pain stemming from plantar fasciitis. After diagnosing the condition, your therapist will provide you with a personalized exercise program designed to reduce inflammation, increase range of motion, and strengthen both the plantar fascia and surrounding areas. While each treatment program will be different, they usually include a mix of stretching, massage, and strengthening techniques. You will also be taught proper walking mechanics to ensure that you are putting the right amount of pressure on your foot as you walk. Many patients experience the most severe symptoms in the morning, so we provide a number of exercises to complete before you even get out of bed. We may also suggest certain types of shoes or insoles that will provide you with the support you need to walk safely and without risking a repeat injury. If you’re suffering from heel pain or experiencing discomfort while walking, call Four Corners today to find out how we can help get you back on the right track, one step at a time.

HOW MUCH SUNSHINE IS TOO MUCH? Keep Your Family Safe

Will you have to bring your own? What’s the best way to step out of the sun for a few minutes? Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing are great ways to shield yourself from UV rays, but it’s important to avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods. Taking a break from the sun gives your body the time it needs to recuperate and helps prevent sunburn and heatstroke. Many people think that a tan is better than a sunburn, but the result of tanning is still sun damage. When your skin tone changes due to the sun, regardless of whether it tans or turns red, it’s a result of the epidermis reacting to damage caused by UV rays. Both are symptoms of harmed skin. While vitamin D is important, the sun does not contribute to its creation as much as you might think. Doris Day, a New York City dermatologist, explains that if your skin were to constantly produce vitamin D from being in the COMMON MYTHS ABOUT SUN EXPOSURE

To many people, summer is all about heading outside to enjoy the weather. But getting too much sun can be dangerous. To have a fun-filled summer with your family this year, remember that it’s essential to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. COVER UP Covering your skin is one of the best ways to avoid skin damage. Wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants or skirts can protect your skin from direct exposure to UV rays. While this tactic protects you from the sun, it offers poor defense against the heat. So, if you opt for cooler attire, it’s important to cover all exposed skin with a copious amount of sunscreen. Be sure to reapply every two hours for maximum skin protection. SPEND LESS TIME IN THE SUN If you’re planning to spend a significant amount of time in the sun, consider your environment. Vitamin D is the only vitamin that your body can produce on its own,

through a common form of cholesterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol. Spending time in the sun does help vitamin D form, but you need far less exposure than you think. Knowing how to protect yourself from UV rays is the first step to having a safe, fun- filled summer!
