The waiting has started for Jonathan Pitre and his mother
Despite everything from radiation and chemotherapy that have led to sleeplessness, nausea, etc., Jonathan is still very confident in his ability to face whatever comes his way. A period of two to three weeks is necessary before the doctors are able to determine the success of the procedure, the first sign being the appearance of white blood cells in his bloodstream.

Jonathan Pitre, the 16-year-old resident of Russell also known as the butterfly child, has now undergone the stem cell transfu- sion procedure that may halt the advance of his skin disease, onThursday September 8, and is now waiting to see if it will have taken hold. After going through nine days of radiation and chemotherapy at theMasonic children’s hospital in Minneapolis, Jonathan’s body was now ready to receive the new stemcells that were taken from the bonemarrow of his mother, Tina Boileau.Themarrowwas taken fromBoileau’s hip onThursdaymorning and the cells later infused into Jonathan’s heart during a three-hour procedure, much akin to a blood transfusion. Jonathan is now recovering from the pro- cedure and is being monitored very closely for any signs of complications, which could quickly become deadly. Should the proce- dure work, his mother’s cells will be inte- grated into Jonathan’s marrow andmay help his body create the type VII collagen protein that he is missing. On the other hand, there are still many risks associated with the pro- cedure that could put Jonathan in danger, such as infection, failure of the cell graft or a rejection by Pitre’s body.
