2023 APEGA Annual Report

Trust & Relevance

Impacts of COVID-19 on women’s full participation in the industry We’ve nearly completed our research on the barriers faced by women in the professions that were introduced or aggravated by the pandemic. This three-year project—funded with a $400,000 federal grant from Women and Gender Equality Canada—builds on the work done for our Women in the Workplace report. •We partnered with seven permit holders of various sizes, working in rural and urban communities, to learn about policies they implemented during the pandemic to address workplace barriers for women and under-represented groups. •We’re developing employer guidelines on recruitment, promotion, and retention leading practices, based on consultations with our partners and the findings of a 2022 survey of 6,700 registrants and more than 600 permit holders. •We’re analyzing 10 years of salary data to highlight pay inequity within the professions. 30-by-30 Initiative With the support of the Women in APEGA Advisory Group, APEGA continues to work towards increasing the proportion of professional engineers and geoscientists who are women to 30 per cent by 2030. In 2023, we gave five presentations updating permit holders and registrants on the initiative’s progress and sharing details of our equity, diversity, and inclusion research projects. More than 200 attendees joined us.

Women’s economic recovery challenge APEGA’s Shift the Culture campaign is funded through a two-year, $250,000 provincial grant from the Women’s Economic Recovery Challenge program. This campaign supports the creation and delivery of free training to help registrants break down the barriers women face and create more inclusive workplaces for everyone. Our free training sessions: •cover many topics, including unconscious bias, competency-based hiring, navigating leaves of absence, workplace microaggressions, and equity, diversity, and inclusion fundamentals •teach leading practices to support building a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion for all under-represented groups •provide tangible actions that individuals, employers,

and organizations can take to address barriers
