The 2022 Slope (CONT’D FROM PAGE 84)

Board Converting NEWS INTERNET DIRECTORY

One wrong turn, or loss of control, and the dangers were tenfold by comparison. The first push was terrifying. As I picked up speed, pan- ic set in. Could I stop? I plowed my skis to slow down and soon realized I should have stretched more beforehand. I could continue to fight the hill straight on, but it was prov- ing to be a painful way down. After fighting the mountain, I embraced what I knew from snowboarding and had long forgotten from skiing. Suddenly that perspective, coupled with an acute awareness of everything going on around and beneath me, I began to carve the mountain more smoothly. Turns out it was like riding a bike. And like riding a bike for the first time in a very long while, I was awkward and clumsy all day but didn’t fall. I did come close to putting a snowboard back on a few times. It would be so much easier and I could take on more of the mountain. In the end, I kept the skis on for the full two days and stuck with the plan. The result was an exhilarating and rewarding time - even on the bunny slope. Sometimes you have to take a different approach, tack- le a new mountain and lean into what you know. Either way, it’s best still to avoid the treeline in 2022. Simona Georgescu is founder and president of Adducco Communications. Visit www.adducomm.com. PPC Names WestRock’s Rosenbrien As First Woods Scholar Award Winner Upon completion of our Fall Boot Camp in December 2021, the J. Edward Woods Scholar Award was officially appointed to Cullen Rosenbrien, a Design Lead at West- Rock, marking him the first recipient of the prestigious honor that showcases a rising star in the folding carton in- dustry and receives a scholarship to PPC’s Folding Carton Boot Camp, our signature training on “all things” paper- board packaging. The late J. Edward Woods, who served as CEO of Gulf States Paper Corporation, was a generous and enthusi- astic supporter of PPC and the paperboard packaging in- dustry as a whole. In addition to serving as PPC’s Board Chair and receiving our association’s lifetime achievement award, Ed was dedicated to engaging the next generation of paperboard packaging professionals through training and outreach. In honor of Ed’s commitment and dedica- tion, his family established the J. Edward Woods Scholar Award, which is given annually to a passionate and enthu- siastic rising star in the folding carton industry. “We’re so delighted that our inaugural Woods Schol- ar Award designee, Cullen Rosenbrien, has officially been named our 2021 Woods Scholar Award Winner, and we look forward to seeing all the fantastic things he will ac- complish for our industry in the years ahead,” said Ben Markens, PPC President.
