EXCEPTIONAL MUSIC. ACADEMIC RIGOR. PURPOSEFUL LEADERSHIP. Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys
A Living Musical Tradition Grace Cathedral has echoed with the voices of children for more than a century. The men’s choir was founded with the Cathedral in 1906, with boys’ voices added in 1913. Today, the Choir remains at the heart of cathedral life, carrying forward the centuries-old Anglican tradition of educating children to sing, lead, and serve through music. A Rare and Distinguished Program Grace Cathedral is one of only three institutions in the United States with a principal choir educated at an affiliated school. Musical excellence fostered at Choir House, combined with the academic rigor of Cathedral School for Boys (CSB), nurtures young men into accomplished musicians, scholars, and leaders.
World-Class Musical Training
Choristers receive college-level musical education and professional performance experience— totaling approximately 900 hours each year. Students develop musicianship and classical vocal technique while mastering sight-reading, music theory, and music history. Regularly featured on recordings and tours, the Choir has performed for a global audience of tens of thousands.
The Choir Program The Choir Program builds musicianship, discipline, and confidence for boys in grades 3 through 8. During the school term, Choristers rehearse daily, attend twice-weekly music theory and vocal training during the school day, and perform weekly at Evensong and Sunday services. The intensive experience fosters lifelong friendships within a supportive and joyful community. The program also features immersive summer and travel experiences. Choristers attend Choir Camp in Healdsburg, CA, each August and connect with global audiences through periodic Choir Tours ; past highlights include Italy (2009), Spain (2013), Austria (2023), England (2025), and Harvard University (2026).
PROBATIONARY YEAR (3rd Grade) Probationers (“Probies”) begin their journey in 3rd grade. The probie year is designed to introduce opportunities to build strong fundamentals and experience all aspects of chorister life in a carefully graduated schedule throughout the year. Classes are integrated into the school day without additional time required until the spring semester. Gradually, probies experience full chorister life.
FALL Meet twice weekly during school; gradually sing with the full choir such as Friday Hymn Sing
SPRING Integrate more fully to experience the
complete rhythm of choir life such as morning rehearsal, Evensong, and Sunday Eucharist
SUMMER Attend a weekend at Choir Camp between 3rd and 4th grades
4TH GRADE Invested as full chorister
A Note From Our Music Director The choristers of Grace Cathedral are one of the most exceptional groups of young people in the United States. Together they strive for excellence in education and performance, in a supportive community that is loving and fun. Every day during school, Choir House is alive with singing and study, and choristers build friendships while learning skills that last a lifetime: focus, self-discipline, teamwork, and love of service. There is no better education for a boy than being a chorister at CSB. DR. JARED JOHNSON
“I not only gained incredible musical training, but also a band of brothers.” —Chorister “My son’s experience in choir has been nothing short of transformative—both musically and in feeling part of something bigger.” —Chorister Parent
