The weather is getting nicer, flowers are blooming and spring sports are in full swing. In today’s society, kids are often playing multiple sports at a time or playing year-round without much of a break. Sports and competition are great, but sometimes playing too much can lead to overuse injuries. Our bodies are constantly reabsorbing old tissue and replacing it with new tissue. When we are physically active, this causes our tissue to break-down, repair, and come back stronger than before. However, when we are super active, this can cause your tissue to break down faster that it repairs and results and in OVERUSE INJURY. In kids, these injuries often crop up in the knees, feet and ankles. Kids are especially at risk because of growth plates, growth spurts and sometimes coordination problems. So what do you do when your child comes home with a painful knee or foot? Mason is an avid soccer player and plays for the Washington Timbers Youth Soccer League. He also plays baseball with Camas Little League. Mike is coaching his team, the Yankees, this

spring. Madison is on the gymnastics team at Vega in downtown Camas and spends much of her week running and tumbling around the gym barefoot. Both of our kids have come home with heel pain. Young kids can be tough to evaluate and sometimes are unable to clearly tell you (continued inside)

where their pain is at…they just know it hurts. In the case of our kids, when they came home with heel pain, Mike was there to check it out. When all his testing came back unremarkable, but they still complained of pain, we were able to resolve their foot pain by putting Superfeet in their shoes. Sometimes, if you can an injury early enough in the progression, you can fix it rapidly. When Mike assessed our kids, their injury hadn’t become bad enough to produce positive findings. Arch supports (in this case, Superfeet) provide some additional stability to the feet to allow the tissue to rest and recover so it can heal. Arch supports can be a great place to start for managing the mysterious foot and knee pain plaguing our kids. Other problem areas to consider include tight calves, hamstrings and hip flexors, weak hips and poor control of knee alignment during sports. Sometimes, Superfeet alone are not enough and P.T. is needed to correct these problem areas in conjunction with the arch supports. Sports are great for our kids for many reasons, but sometimes do lead to overuse injuries. We see youth athletes from all types of sports in the clinic

regularly. Prescribing Superfeet is frequently part of our treatment plan. If you’re kids are struggling with heel or knee pain, we’d love to help. At the very least, we would like to offer you the opportunity to pick up some Superfeet at a discounted price: You can purchase SuperFeet in the clinic for $35. Standard retail on SuperFeet is $45-$65. Just call ahead of time to make sure we have your size in stock. If we do, we will set them aside and you can come in to pick up a pair. We recommend the Green pair for tennis shoes and the Black pair for cleats. Cleats often have less space available in the shoe, so match up best with the lower profile BlackSuperFeetdesign.TheGreenpairaregenerally the best for daily footwear and work the best for most people. If the SuperFeet don’t do the trick, it is likely there are some other problem areas that need to be addressed (as mentioned above). If this is the case, we encourage you to schedule an appointment so we can help make your child’s foot or knee pain a problem of the past!

ARE YOU WALKING AS WELL AS YOU SHOULD?

Problems with walking increase as we age and are a leading cause of falls and disability in older adults. At least 20% of adults over 65 have problems with walking. This further increases to 50% in adults 85 years old and older. Most of these problems with walking are associated with underlying diseases. 9 Things That Stifle Your Stride Problems with walking are not a direct consequence of getting older.
