What a change has come over the face of the earth. A little while ago all Nature seemed either dying or dead. Silence^as of sodden decay, a cloud like a funeral pall hung over the dreary land. But now the chill mists have departed, the lark is singing at the ruby portals of “the jocund morn,” while What means this marvelous and welcome change? What is the secret of the glory and the joy? Just this, that we have been drawing closer to the sun, and the proximity spells Spring and Summer for a saddened world. The birds are singing and the buds are bursting, there is the promise of harvest and of fruit, because we are approaching to the great luminary of heaven. “The LORD God is a sun” : the nearer we get to Him the sooner will “the winter of our discontent” be passed; the quicker will “life blossom into song,” the more abundantly shall we bring forth fruit to the glory of our God. All joy, all usefulness, all beauty, all hope, lie in proximity to Him. PRECIOUS words! yet how much more precious when read in connection with those that precede them. For of all the things which trouble our hearts are there any to compare with the sense of our failure and our sin ? The disciples were not only to mourn the absence of their Lord, they were to fail in their allegiance; their very leader was to prove recreant to the faith. Yet Christ says: “Let not your heart be troubled.” Not that there were to be no regrets for their shortcomings, but they were not to yield to despair. Christ speaks the same words to us, in our weakness, today. we are to believe, not only in God—as God—but in Him, the God made Man that He might atone for our transgressions. Op pressed with the remembrance of our own disloyalty, we are to fix our hopes upon One who is Faithful and True; One whose fidelity is accepted for our own. Tempted to feel lonely and forsaken, we are to turn to Him Who has promised that He-will never abandon us, nor leave us in orphanhood of His love and care. Our imperfections, our Weakenesses, our cowardice, our denials, cannot quench His affection nor lessen His constancy; and, while we repent bitterly of our sin, we need be neither despairing nor afraid. M ay 24. “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. — Jno. 2:5. THIS is the secret of all true blessedness. Unquestioning and prompt obedience to our Lord’s every command is the way to fill life’s vessels with the new wines of pleasure and of peace. Let us mark the “Whatsoever"—“ Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it;” it is so easy to doubt the wisdom of some of His com mands, to shrink from the cost involved in obeying some, to look upon others as of minor moment, not worth the trouble of ful filment. It is just here that so many of us fail. We are willing “One chant of life and beauty thrills From wilding fern and stately tree.” M ay 23. “Let not your heart be troubled.”—Jno. 14:1. “When the heart is sad within With the thought of all our sin,”
