“Best” Books
STATELY, evergreen, impervious to the winter ,storm and to the summer heat; every part of it of utility to man; bearing ah ever increasing burden of fruit, even in its latest years; what could be a more fitting emblem of the Christian at his best? Are we like palm trees planted in the courts of the house of our God? Are we monuments of glory and of gracefulness? Do we fling refreshing shade over the weary hearts of men? Are all our powers and all our possessions sanctified to their service, and our Lord’s? Let us note the secrets of the palm tree’s beauty and vitality, that we may learn to insure our own. Its roots run through the earth till they rest in a river or a spring, hence its perpetual verdure and freshness. .“All my fresh springs,” says the Psalmist, “are in thee.” We must draw the living water from the riven Rock and from the fountains of eternal life. Unlike other trees, which grow at their circumference,- the palm tree adds its'new wood at the center; hence it is safe from insect and from frost. Ours must be an inner life, “hid with Christ in God.” We must have a secret growth, the beauty and fruit of which may be visible to men, but whose vitality is beyond the reach of the chills of sorrow and of the parasites of sin. True, these things are beyond our compassing, but the God who made the palm tree can make us, and keep us, beautiful for Himself. DO not spend your precious moments arguing about Jesus Christ; come and see! The Devil ?s never at a loss in suggesting doubts and difficulties, and the longer you dally with them the more numerous and the more bewildering they become. Theo retics are of little value in things spiritual, a grain of experience is worth more than a ton of discussion and of suppositioni’ If you desire to know the truth concerning the claims made by Christ—His power to save, and help, and bless, do not stand afar off, hesitating, cavilling, criticizing; come and see. Until you come, you will say: “I wo n d e r wh e n you have been to Him, you will say: “I know.” As long as you argue from a distance, you will doubt; once you have really gazed upon that divine and tender face, all the devils in hell will not be able to shake your confidence. Christ Himself is His only Interpreter to the soul that knows Him not. We shall do well when dealing with the skeptic and the doubter, if we confine ourselves to Philip’s invita tion. As a rule, we waste our breath when we dispute with those who do not believe in the Messiah. It is not the intellect which needs to be captivated, but the heart.. True faith does not rest upon mentality, but upon affection, and there can be no affection without acquaintance. Let us say to humanity: “We have found the Christ; if you do not believe it, come and see!” MEN sometimes ask: “What do you mean by ‘coming to Christ,’ how am I to come?” The very question shows how far we have lifted spiritual things out of the region of the real and practical into that of the vague and mystical. “How are we to come to Christ?” Why, just as we go to any other man. True,, the journey is rather one of the heart than of the body; for He is everywhere and we can speak to Him without change of local ity. Just as I am, and just where I am, I can tell Him of my need and ask for His salvation and His help—that is coming to Christ. If I believe that He has heard and will answer, that is accepting Him. It is all so simple. Nay, its very simplicity is a stumbling block to many. They cannot believe but that there J une 2. “Come and seet’’—Jno. 1:46. J une 3. , “Come unto me.”—Matt. 11:28.
