Tony Luis’ road to world-class

“I hope I can at least have one fight here in Cornwall. I’m hum- bled by the support and the feedback I’ve gotten from the community. champion

record when it comes time to give back to the community. “I barbeque a lot, when it comes to charities,” he explained. “I just love giving back to people.” Luis’s intensive portfolio consists of help- ing several local agencies such as BBBS (Big Brother Big Sisters), as well as the Boys and Girls club, to name a few. On April 21, the local star will also be barbequing and do- nating signed memorabilia in an effort at raising funds for autism. Prior to a fight When asked what goes through his mind before a fight, a hint of emotion forms on the successful boxer’s face, in the form of a smile. “In the days leading to the fight, every- thing is great,” he said. “I’m not stressed or anything. Yet it’s when you’re in the dress- ing room that it gets real. The nerves meet the adrenaline and the whole process seems the turn everything in slow motion.” Yet when his name is read out and that he hears “his”music, the Cornwall native states that everything just flies out the window. “As soon as I’m in the ring, I forget all the tension I had prior to that,” he said. “I’m just so concentrated; it feels as if I’m in the gym. I seem to forget that so many people are watching me. My auto-pilot kicks in and it pumps me up.” Luis does know, however, that in recent years, the spotlight has been on the silent killer affecting several athletes, not only in boxing, but in any other physical sport: con- cussions. Even with a solid 17-2 record, the world class champion does admit he’s suffered from a concussion before. “During a fight in

2013, I suffered a concussion,” he admitted, with a hint of emotion in his voice. “I had bad headaches

CORNWALL | The discovery of fighting tapes in his father’s basement ignited a deep-rooted love for boxing and led a Cornwall native to become well known across North America. Now a much respected fighter, Tony Luis embraces his love of the sport. “I’ve been a PSW (personal support worker) on and off over the past couple of years,” explained the boxer. “But lately, I’ve been focusing full time on my boxing career.” The art of the said sport is in Luis’s genes, as his own father, Jorge Luis was a fighter in his younger days and is now his son’s manager.“My father really loves boxing,” ex- pressed the young man. “He started when he was younger, with a group of his friends.” Unfortunately for Jorge, a severe ankle injury he sustained at only 19 years of age, forced him to retire from the ring. His pas- sion, however, did not simply vanish. “He’s my manager,” explained Luis. “He’s got the last say in any of my fights.” The young boxer also highlights that a true champion needs a great team behind him. “You need a team that will support you,” he expressed. “You’re nothing without them.” Giving back to the community Recently, Luis made headlines when it was announced he would be befitted with the honor of being Cornwall’s very own am- bassador of the year. Also a great athlete, the young man has also quite a long track

and I had to take some weeks off of training.” Although the sport does contain some risks, it has also made Luis travel quite a bit. “I signed a new contract in 2013 and since then, I’ve been to sev- eral fights in

New York S t a t e , ” he ex- plained. “My most r e c e n t one was in Mem- phis.” The lo- cal celebrity hopes, how- ever, being able to have at least one bout in his home- town.
