Graham and Adam Learn, two young Ontario farmers in their thirties, joined their parents’ farm ¿ve years ago after studying agricultural management at university. With them, they brought a change in perspective and methods to their livestock and grain farm. Before their arrival, the family business consisted of 100 sows. The farm now has 350 sows as well as a herd of cows. Graham says that he believes that ef¿ciency and discipline are essential in today’s agricultural context. Aware of the importance of diversi¿cation in agriculture, the brothers hope to broaden their scope of activities in order to be ready to take over the farm from their parents. AWAY OF LIFE AND A REALAGRICULTURAL BUSINESS The young Learns believe that education is the key to success for modern farmers; keeping up with new technologies is essential for navigating the complexities of industrial agriculture. The new generation of farmers must be on top of their ¿nances and have long-term develop- ment plans for their farms. Today, a farm that is a primary source of income for a family needs to be treated like a big business. Nevertheless, farming is not just a trade. For its owners and managers, agriculture is a lifestyle as well. The Learns are no nine-to-¿ve workers: the farm preoccupies them, body and soul, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Far from resentful, however, these young farmers believe that they have a promising future in their chosen ¿eld.
