HAYMAKING The haymaking process is comprised of several different steps: mowing, turning (or tedding), and raking. The hay is cut by a mower, hitched behind a tractor, and the cut hay is left in small piles. The hay tedder spreads the cut hay and Àuffs, or aerates, it in order to accelerate drying. When the hay is suf¿ciently dry it is formed into long rows, known as windrows, using a hay rake. COMBINE HARVESTERS The combine harvester is used for harvest- ing grains. It has two main functions: cut- ting the crop and separating the grain from the straw. The cutting bar cuts the plant at the stem and feeds it through the thresh- ing drum or cylinder by means of a worm drive. The crop passes through several steel rotors, which separate the grain from the
straw. The straw exits from the back of the machine while the grain is directed into a hopper, or container. SILO-FILLERS The function of a silo-¿ller is to ¿nely chop green forage plants, such as corn or grasses. The product is then stored in silos and left to ferment for several months before the end-product, the silage, is used to feed livestock. In the case of corn, the silo- ¿ller grinds the entire plant, which means it has to be very powerful. Some silo-¿ller engines reach 1,000 hp, but the average engine is usually around 600 hp. HAY PRESSES Hay presses are used to compress fodder or hay for more ef¿cient binding, tran- sportation, and delivery.
