L’année prochaine, ce sera au tour de Bourget d’accueillir dans ses rues la marche des femmes. Les statistiques concernant les agres- sions à caractère sexuel sont éloquentes. Au Canada, les femmes représentent le plus grand nombre de victimes d’agressions sexuelles. Le taux de 33 actes par 1000 femmes n’a pas changé depuis le début des années 1990. Parmi les adultes victimes d’agressions sexuelles signalées à la police, 92% sont des femmes, et elles connaissent leur agresseur dans trois-quarts des cas. À l’échelle nationale, les taux d’actes de vio- lence envers les "lles de moins de 12 ans déclarés par la police étaient, en Ontario seulement, de 301 pour 100 000 "lles.

Voilà pourquoi le Centre Novas CALACS francophone de Prescott-Russell invite toutes les femmes et les jeunes !lles à prendre part à la sep- tième marche des femmes, le 17 septem- bre prochain, à Saint-Isidore. En partenariat avec la municipalité de La Nation, le Centre Novas organise une fois de plus cette année la marche appelée La rue, la nuit, femmes sans peur . C’est à 18h au 20, rue de l’Aréna, que quelque 200 femmes sont attendues pour déambuler dans les rues a"n de se faire voir. Cet événement de sensibilisation communautaire se veut solidaire à la cause de la violence faite aux femmes, plus particulièrement aux agres- sions à caractère sexuel dont les femmes et les jeunes sont majoritairement victimes. «Le partenariat des municipalités est vital dans la tenue d’un événement comme celui-ci, a expliqué la présidente du Centre Novas, Anne Jutras. A Catholic school system includes instruc- tion in the doctrine, tenets, and moral and ethical issues that are part and parcel of the Roman Catholic faith. “If a Catholic school is no di$erent from a public school,” he said, “then what’s the point of it? But if a Catholic school is a Ca- tholic school, then faith is also part of the curriculum. If I can make a di$erence, I will try to.” Gervais emphasized that he has no objec- tions or problems with the past work of Sue
Wilson, the incumbent CDSBEO trustee. He contacted her during the time when he was considering whether or not to run, to let her know his "nal decision. With the start of the o!cial campaign period, Gervais is working on developing both a website as part of his candidate pro- motion and also nailing down his campaign strategy and platform. “What I’ve been doing so far until now,”he said, “has been word-of-mouth since I "led my nomination papers.” He noted that the Catholic school sys- tem in Canada has a long history of o!- cial acceptance and support dating back to Confederation when it was enshrined in the British North America Act and its place in Canadian society was recon"rmed more than a century later in the Canadian Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Catholic school system, he added, is not just for students from Catholic families either. “There are parents who are not Catholics,

who want their children taught in a Catholic school,” he said, noting that the “value-ad- ded curriculum” is part of the reason. In the hypertext world of the 21 st Century, when children and adults have immediate access through the Internet and email to information, both good and bad, Gervais is con"dent that the Catholic Church and the Catholic school system can compete. “Family is the key,” he said.
