ASM22 Final Program

Cannabis and Implications for Clinical Dental Practice

A. Jose Lança, MD, PhD

Cannabis is a commonly used drug with significant adverse effects and potential for abuse and dependence. Its therapeutic use for specific medical conditions, including neuropathic pain, spasticity in multiple sclerosis, analgesia in cancer patients and prevention of chemotherapy- induced nausea and vomiting, has been approved by Health Canada. Considering the recent legislative changes for the non-medical use of cannabis, it is expected that its use, adverse effects and risks will become more frequent. Therefore, it is important for health care professionals to increase awareness of the organization of the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoid exposure and implications for systemic and oral health. Learning Objectives: • Discuss (a) the endogenous cannabinoid system: receptors and endogenous cannabinoids; (b) the active cannabinoids compounds of the cannabis plant; and (c) relevance for clinical practice • Discuss oral pathologies and systemic effects of cannabis, as related to the route of administration (smoked versus ingested), frequency of use (acute verus chronic) and clinically relevant drug interactions • Discuss clinically relevant drug interactions (DIs) between cannabis and CNS depressants, sympathomometics, anticoagulants and drug metabolism
