This course seeks to provide some information to answer the question about the continued relevance/need for fixed orthodontic treatment in today’s orthodontic marketplace, which is filled with aligner products. Some of the pros and cons of fixed and aligner therapies will be presented, as well as recently published evidenced-based research. Aligner treatment will continue to be a large part of orthodontics, and future improvements and developments with aligners will only enhance the market share of these products. At the same time, fixed appliance will continue to be a viable and oftentimes required orthodontic therapy. Learning Objectives: • Learn what types of orthodontic problems aligner systems are good at treating • Learn what types of orthodontic problems aligner systems struggle with and where fixed appliances may be better • Learn what can be done to enhance aligner treatments and learn what new improvements are in the aligner market, as well as what the future may hold for aligner treatments

Dr. Eric B. Lowenhaupt is a board-certified (ABO); university-trained (Emory University) orthodontist. Since 1986 he has been in the private practice of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics in Jupiter, Fla. He cares for a variety of patients, including children and adults. Dr. Lowenhaupt lectures both nationally and internationally through his company, Gnathos South, Inc., and in affiliation with the Australian Dental Association NSW/CPD.
