Diagnostic Detectives: Catching Common Culprits and Spotting A Mimic in Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Oral Radiology

Through case presentation and real life examples, this lecture will review the clinical and radiologic features of the most common sources of diagnostic uncertainty, in contrast to the important characteristics of rarer diseases that may mimic them. In addition, situations will be highlighted when clues from the patient’s history are key to making the diagnosis. Learning Objectives: • Key questions to obtain a good history when evaluating a patient for risk factors. • Practical tips to aid in the recognition of key features that distinguish various pathologies of the jaws • To recognize situations when further investigation is needed.

Dr. Kristina Perschbacher is a specialist in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine.She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Most of the Kristina’s time is spent seeing patients in private Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine practice. She also teaches in the undergraduate oral pathology and postgraduate oral pathology and oral radiology programs at the University of Toronto. Dr. Susanne Perschbacher is an Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist dividing her time be-tween Oral Radiology practice and teaching at University of Toronto. She is also a consultant at SickKids Hospital. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and a lead author of the textbook “Diagnostic Imaging: Oral and Maxillofacial”.
