The Periodontal Co-Therapist: Contemporary Periodontology for the Registered Dental Hygienist

Timothy Hempton, DDS

In addition to providing patient care, dental hygienists educate and advise their patients regarding their periodontal diagnosis, etiology/risk factors, proposed therapeutic options and the treatment experience. This course will present documentation of various clinical cases treated with non-surgical therapy and surgical therapy. These cases will illustrate how contemporary periodontal therapy can be utilized to provide health, restore the periodontium and improve esthetics for our patients. Scientific evidence supporting the periodontal therapy used in each clinical case is examined. Learning Objectives: • Review how systemic and local risk factors affect the diagnosis and prognosis of periodontal disease • Review the impact of non-surgical therapy on the subgingival biofilm and the value of adjunctive therapy • Describe the limitations of non-surgical debridement and indications for surgical intervention, that is, periodontal regeneration procedures
