ASM22 Final Program

De-mystifying Oro-Facial Pain for the Dental Practitioner

Brian Freund, DDS, MD

Orofacial pain patients make most general practitioners (GP), as well as specialists, cringe. However, caring for these unfortunate individuals can be personally rewarding and advantageous for the practice. With a basic understanding of different types of pain and how to differentiate them, most patients can be quickly and effectively diagnosed. This course will focus on the most common non-toothache pain conditions presenting to the GP. It will review the basic physiology of pain and offer a simplified practical approach to dealing with the patient who presents in pain. Learning Objectives: • To quickly and confidently diagnose the most common orofacial pain conditions encountered in a dental practice • To provide an algorithm for the treatment of these conditions, allowing dentists to decide whether to treat or to refer and to whom • Make attendees aware of different diagnostic and imaging techniques and when to use them
