Restorative Decision-Making for Endodontically Treated Teeth
Nader M. Sharifi, DDS, MS
It used to be we only worried about the need to have or to avoid a post in an endodontically treated tooth. That has now evolved to include threaded, passive and non-metallic dowels, and resin and non-resin cements, as well as direct cores or indirect post and cores. Moreover, we have to consider an extraction and an implant, rather than the root canal in the first place. Through master’s research of finite element analysis, this course will provide a picturesque presentation on these and many other questions related to the endodontically treated tooth. Recent protocols for identifying the endodontic failure should help to clarify the dilemma we face when determining the fate of a tooth to extraction or restoration. We’ll discuss the implication of the root canal on the restorative success of the tooth to compare these treatment options. Last, we’ll delve back into the topic of resorption to crystallize the understanding of the different diagnoses that are possible. Learning Objectives: • Have a clear understanding of the implications of prefabricated and custom cast dowels • Understand the options available to diagnose and treatment plan the endodontic failure • Diagnose the various resorptions that can occur and plan the appropriate course of action
