Where Are the Permanent Cuspids? A Question to Ask for All Patients Between Seven and 11 Years of Age

Eric Lowenhaupt, DDS

For patients who are between seven and 11 years of age, the practitioner should always check for the position of the unerupted permanent cuspids as part of an initial exam. If these teeth cannot be palpated on the buccal, apical to the deciduous cuspid, then a screening OPG is recommended. This course will detail what to look for on the OPG and discuss some simple treatment alternatives for treatment of potentially impacted permanent cuspids. Learning Objectives: • What to look for on the OPG as far as unerupted permanent cuspid positions, and what three factors influence cuspid impaction • What treatment protocols should be followed for impacted cuspids • When are CT scans recommended?
