The Medium Is the Message: Where to FromHere—Part 1: Using Antibiotics Wisely — Helping Clinicians and Patients Engage In Conversations About Unnecessary Antibiotic Use: A Role For The Whole Dental Team This course will explore the UK dental antimicrobial stewardship toolkit as well as the work of Choosing Wisely Canada. The UK evidence-based toolkit includes dental team and patient-facing resources aimed at reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescribing by dentists. The work of Choosing Wisely Canada, in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada, will be summarized highlighting the progress made in patients with respiratory tract infection in primary care. While translating antimicrobial stewardship interventions directly from medicine to dentistry may not always work, bringing together Canadian strategies and UK-developed resources, will suggest opportunities for the advancement of antimicrobial stewardship in Canadian dentistry. Learning Objectives: • To understand why antimicrobial resistance is an emerging public health crisis • To introduce the new UK behaviour-science informed dental antimicrobial stewardship toolkit that uses a shared decision-making approach involving the whole dental team • To review where most antimicrobials are prescribed in Canada and the opportunities for antimicrobial stewardship, using examples of proven strategies in the care of patients with respiratory tract infection in primary care
