The Medium Is the Message: Where to From Here – Part 2: The Role Of Data and of the Regulator In Curbing Antibiotic Resistance. What Can Be Done In Ontario? Antimicrobial resistance is a rising public health crisis fueled in part by antibiotic overuse. This presentation will explore the drivers of antibiotic overuse as well as data driven solutions to curb inappropriate antibiotic use and improve quality of patient care. Modern regulatory approaches focus on continuing competence, acknowledging that quality assurance, improvement and CE are cornerstones of professionalism. Examples will be used to explore how regulators can add value to a dental antibiotic strategy. Learning Objectives: • To review the evidence on antibiotic overuse, including behavioural drivers of antibiotic prescribing • To review evidence-based, data-driven interventions to improve appropriate antibiotic prescribing • To understand the evolution and role of regulatory programs in continuing competence and the importance of regulatory engagement as part of an antibiotic strategy in dentistry
