Wendy Thompson BSc(Hons), BDS(Hons), PhD, MCGDent

Is There a Problem in Dentistry? Prescribing patterns in dentistry before, during and after COVID-19 Antibiotics are life-saving drugs, essential for the safe provision of modern medicine. Globally, dentistry is responsible for around 10% of antibiotics prescribed across health care and research has shown up to 80% of dental antibiotics may be unnecessary. This session will explore patterns of antibiotic prescribing by dentists before COVID-19 and, in Australia, England and BC, during COVID-19. Reasons for differences will be explored and future directions will discussed. Learning Objectives: • To show why reducing unnecessary antibiotic use is so important locally, nationally and globally • To explore differences in antibiotic prescribing in different regions of the world before COVID • To learn how COVID-19 impacted on dental antibiotic prescribing and consider future projections
