This course will review the prevention of infection in minor oral surgery, as well as the diagnosis and management of infections in contemporary practice. In this context, we will review various techniques in local anaesthesia and procedural sedation to provide a framework for a comprehensive approach to the patient in pain and/or infection. Learning Objectives: • Improve your understanding of common oral and maxillofacial infections • Provide an update on the controversies and current best practices in infection prevention for minor oral surgery • Review and improve your understanding of strategies for performing anaesthesia in challenging situations

Dr. Karl Cuddy studied at McMaster University where he received his BSc prior to starting professional and graduate studies at Western University and the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed his studies in dentistry and medicine, receiving DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and MD (Doctor of Medicine) degrees. Hospital-based residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery was completed over six years through the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, London Health Sciences Center and St. Joseph’s Health care London. He is an Assistant professor and Director of Education and Maxillofacial Trauma at the University of Toronto’s graduate training program in oral and maxillofacial surgery, where he works providing clinical care at Mount Sinai, Princess Margaret and Humber River hospitals. His clinical interests include management of benign maxillofacial pathology and maxillofacial trauma, as well as the use of technology to improve outcomes in craniomaxillofacial reconstructive surgery.
