Ladies’ Night… to help see the autism spectrum differently
—photo fournie

Realizing howmany wore hats to their pre- vious Ladies’ Night events, the organizing committee adopted them this year, along with the Kentucky derby theme, to symbol- ize the different spectrums of autism. And for both instances, there is no one-size- fits-all option. The nature of the disease being what it is – a neurological imbalance – it has been shown that many women tend to sacrifice careers by staying at home to take care of their diagnosed children. Many then struggle with depression, anxiety and isolation. With rates of 1 in 68 children being di- agnosed on the spectrum, the community, education and health system need to be able to better understand the spectrumand deal with it. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the name for a group of developmental disor- ders. ASD includes a wide range, “a spec- trum,” of symptoms, skills, and levels of dis- ability. People with ASD often show signs of ongoing social problems that include difficulty communicating and interacting with others. AutismCanada, which all proceeds of the event will go to, has got boots on the ground throughout the country to help adults and parents navigate through resources available when living with autism. Laurel Gibbons, Autism Canada board director and mother of a child diagnosed
with autism, has been advocating the cause since 2005 and has had to overcome many challenges since. “It’s getting somuch better, we’ve created videos, resources and most importantly, we’ve created the Physician’s handbook.” As she explained, when children start displaying signs of autism, parents don’t seek help with social workers, they turn to the medical community to try recognize the early signs. “We know earlier we catch it, the earlier we can intervene, the better the likely out- come is.” Just a few years back, it wasn’t the case when her son was diagnosed at the age of 5 and a half and she was sent home with “some anti-psychotics and a tap on the
back”. Her personal connection to the cause helped her to speak up, with the wish to “make someone else’s journey a bit easier”. “I felt somarginalized because there was no help for my child, I was broken-hearted”, added Gibbons. “But we’re learning more and more. There are biomedical protocols, with vitamins supplementation. And looking at the whole person, there’s a lot of gut or in- testinal problems with kids on the spectrum, because they don’t break things down the same. It could be a simple food sensitivity at cause.” This May 5 th event, for women only, con- sists of a silent auction, dinner, live auction and entertainment, and all of the money
raised from the silent and live auctions will go to help fund research on autism. “The future of families living with au- tism is looking bright, especially with the new initiatives that are coming and people like these ladies who give the time, energy and love for the community,” concluded Gibbons. “Together we can accomplish so much more.” Tickets are $50 each and must be pur- chased in advance (reserved seating) either online at www.RussellFair.comor by calling 613-445-4161. All tickets purchased before April 8 will be eligible to win an awesome prize. For details, visit the Russell Ladies’ Night Facebook page.
