Talking about building a culture of safety and human reliability is easy. But how many great ideas get talked about and never actually get put into practice? The real skill is to be able to transform good ideas into practical steps that you and your people can apply immediately. In this article, that’s what you’ll get. There is no one secret or solution. Cascades To Shut Down Corrugator At Facility In Belleville, Ontario Kingsey Falls, Quebec, Canada based Cascades Inc. has announced the permanent shutdown of the corrugator at its Belleville facility, as part of the continuing optimization initiatives of the corporation’s Containerboard Packaging platform in Ontario. Effective no later than December 2nd, the shutdown will provide the facility with a more sustain- able business model by focusing its operations on con- verting activities as a high volume, efficient and graphic sheet plant. “With additional capacity generated by the strategic optimization of our network in Ontario in recent years, we have the ability to redeploy this production to other units in the region,” said Charles Malo, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Containerboard Packag- ing. “By doing so, we will significantly reduce costs and re-focus Belleville’s priorities to converting. This decision will position our platform for long-term success and further strengthen our service offering for our valued customers” The shutdown will impact 31 of the 106 employees. Cascades will work with these individuals to minimize the impact of this announcement, including by offering them the option to transfer to other Cascades’ units. Employees who cannot, or do not wish to relocate to other plants, will receive support in their search for other employment.

learned through the pandemic, the added flexibility and capabilities that come from being a manufacturer, distrib- utor, and perhaps most importantly, a packaging solution provider, can mean the difference of days, weeks, and even months, to our clients. And that’s not to mention the quality control benefit our design-to-delivery spectrum of services provides.” Jana Harris Featured In Latest Episode Of Breaking Down Boxes AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has dropped the latest episode of its Breaking Down Boxes series, “A Twisty Road to the Top.” In this podcast, Gene Marino, President of Akers Packaging Service Group and AICC Past Board Chair, and Joe Morelli, Vice President of Sales & Marketing of Huston Patterson Printers & Lewis- burg Printing Company and AICC Past Associate Board Chair, speak with Jana Harris, President & CEO of Harris Packaging and American Carton Co., and AICC’s Board Chair. “Jana’s path is not the typical course of a 2nd gener- ation converter. There are lessons to be learned, human and business, from the path, the arrival, the sister, the third generation and the passion,” said Mike D’Angelo, AICC President.
Harris has come a long way since she was a child roll- er skating around the box plant founded by her parents. With an entrepreneurial spirit, she started a business at the age of 29, only to be forced to fire her partner the next year. Later, her compassion and education lead her to a four-year stint in healthcare. Four years later, she and her sister, Jenise Cox, now CFO of the family companies, were brought into Harris Packaging by their father after he had to replace a once-trusted employee. While Harris’ path might not have been direct, with the support of family and strong teams, her companies have Jana Harris, President & CEO of Harris Packaging and Ameri- can Carton Company and AICC’s Board Chair.

McIlvaine joined TRG in 1990 and was named President in 1995. He has been in- strumental to the success of TRG throughout his 32-year career. During his tenure with TRG, McIlvaine built an amazing management team, modernized the manufac- turing capabilities, and increased sales every year under his leadership. These achievements were accomplished during some of the most challenging times including the great recession financial crisis and the pandemic. “We thank Bob for his leadership and commitment to the company and our family culture”, said John Schwarz, General Partner at Schwarz Partners. Effective January 1, 2023, Kevin Miller will assume the role of President & CEO of The Royal Group. Miller began his career with TRG as a sales representative in 2006. Greif Confirms Investments In Two Recycling Operations
Greif’s Paper Packaging and Services (PPS) business has confirmed two significant investments in its recycling oper- ations to support its growth strategy in sustainable paper packaging solutions. A new 81,000-square-foot paper recycling facility for collecting, processing, and baling has opened in Florence, Kentucky, bringing Greif’s total number of recycling facili- ties across North America to 19. In addition, Greif has more than doubled the size of its paper fiber recycling plant in Nashville, Tennessee, to en- hance efficiency and support accelerated growth. The ex- panded facility covers a floor space of 72,000-square-feet. Both plants are located in areas where demand for a collection of waste fiber and the supply of recycled paper and board is experiencing continued growth. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

The paper fiber recycling plants are located near Greif-operated paperboard mills and other containerboard and recycled paper product manufactur- ers, and where greater growth opportunities are possible. He also served as President of the American Inde- pendent Corrugated Converters (AICC). In his retirement, he continued to enjoy golf at Carrying Place Golf Club, making great wine and baking appetizing bread and pizzas. The most meaningful part of John’s life was his family – his love had no bounds. He was a devoted son to pre-deceased parents Gerardo and Antonietta Francio- sa, a loving husband, an amazing Dad and Nonno and a special brother and Zio. John brought joy and laughter to every family dinner and special occasion. He has left a large hole in the lives of his wife, Mona, his children, Michael and Diana, Laura and Tyler, and his grand-children Isabella, Sofia, Benjamin and Gwen. He will also be greatly missed by Nancy and Tony, Mary and Vito, their families and many extended family members. John’s friendships were very important to him. He had many friends from his ele- mentary and high school years, the “Pals” from engineering and friends through his years playing squash and golf. He was highly respected in business for his integ- rity and his belief in people’s potential and strengths, mentoring many. The Franciosa family would like to thank Dr. C. Christian Fischer Champions Sustainability Via Georgia-Pacific’s Stewardship Framework The paper, packaging and wood products industry is filled with sustain- ability leaders. This includes AF&PA’s Board Chair, Christian Fischer. As
President and CEO of Georgia-Pacific, he champions sustainability daily, and has sup- ported it throughout his career. Recently, he explained how Georgia-Pacific is guided by its broader Stewardship Framework, en- compassing environmental, social and gov- ernance. Fischer started working at Georgia-Pa- cific more than three decades ago. He pre- viously served as Executive Vice President of the Packaging and Cellulose Segment, where he was responsible for products the

company makes, including corrugated boxes and diaper materials. “At Georgia-Pacific, we view stewardship as a principle that guides us to manage the resources entrusted to our care with proper respect for the rights of others,” Fischer said. “This includes both natural resources and the relationships we have with customers, employees, communities, and others. With this focus, we help people improve their lives by provid- ing products and services they value more highly than their alternatives. We experiment and innovate to responsibly create more value while consuming fewer resources. We seek mutually beneficial outcomes with customers, employees, suppliers, communities, and key constituencies.” This approach happens at approximately 150 U.S. locations where Georgia-Pacific employees live and work. “We have been and continue to be an important part of the commu- nities in which we operate,” Fischer added. “We provide good jobs and contribute to prosperity through our economic activity and the engage- ment of our company and employees in civic activities.” Its diverse workforce ensures Georgia-Pacific brings new perspec- tives to an ever-changing industry. Fischer believes every person has a role to play in advancing stewardship. “We recognize the uniqueness of each individual and believe this di- versity enables us to work together to identify opportunities, solve prob- lems, and create greater value for others,” he said. “Creating a work envi- ronment that welcomes individuals of all backgrounds and experiences, and one that allows everyone to contribute leads to better ideas and decisions, and ultimately, creates more value for society.” This type of stewardship leadership helps drive the paper and wood products industry forward. It is also another reason why the industry has a sustainability record of accomplishment. One example of Georgia-Pacific’s stewardship approach includes a 1:1 philosophy that for every tree used, at least one tree is regrown. This helps ensure there are working forests for the future. “Long-term thinking and mutually-beneficial outcomes drive our ap- proach,” Fischer explained. “We focus on providing societal benefits while choosing the best materials, minimizing the impact of our products and building end-of-life options, including recycling and composting. We are an industry that has a circular supply chain, from replanting trees that supply fiber and enhance the environment, to recycling paper and pack- aging turned into new products. We have been at this for a long time and are working hard today to create an even better tomorrow.” 14 November 14, 2022

I want to thank Ramón Alejandro for choos- ing Ohio for his first facility in North America and for suggesting that we strengthen our economic ties.” “Ohio has a growing relationship with Aragón, and this agreement will take our partnership to a new level,” said Lydia Miha- lik, Director of the Ohio Department of De- velopment. “We look forward to strengthen- ing our cooperation for the benefit both of our economies.” AF&PA Announces Winners Of Sustainability Projects The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has announced its Better Practic- es, Better Planet 2030 Sustainability Award winners, which recognizes exemplary sus- tainability programs and initiatives in the paper and wood products manufacturing industry. “This is the first year we are presenting awards in alignment with our new Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 sustainabili- ty goals and statement of principles on di- versity, equity and inclusion,” said AF&PA President and CEO Heidi Brock. “It is excit-

Cascades has chosen to have the recyclability of the packaging it manufactures assessed, saving its customers the time and money required for this step. Brand owners and re- tailers can request their recyclability labels directly from How2Recycle, without the need for prior testing by out- side labs. By providing its customers with pre-qualification letters, Cascades has simplified the process by confirm- ing the recyclability of its packaging in advance. These pre-qualifications are valid in Canada and the U.S. All packaging manufactured by Cascades for food and other consumer products underwent the How2Recycle re- cyclability assessment. Cascades is continuing its efforts to innovate so that all of its packaging is recyclable, com- postable or reusable by 2030.
“This important and pro-active measure increases transparency for our customers by providing them with reliable and verified information on recyclability, and rep- resents another progressive step in our ambitious Sus- tainability Action Plan,” said Mario Plourde, President and CEO, Cascades. “For nearly 60 years, Cascades has ad- opted a circular economy mindset and continues innovat- ing to ensure every bit of material is used.” AICC Webinar To Provide Tips On Preventing Downtime If downtime is an issue at your box plant, you will be in- terested in an upcoming webinar available to members of AICC, The Independent Packaging Association. NAM: Manufacturing Employment, Earnings Increase In October Manufacturing employment increased by 32,000 in Octo- ber, up from 23,000 in September and continuing to rise solidly, according to Chad Moutray, Ph.D. and Chief Econ- omist at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). Currently, the manufacturing sector has 12,922,000 em- ployees, the most since November 2008. The average hourly earnings of production and nonsupervisory work- ers in manufacturing rose 0.4 percent from $25.25 in Sep- tember to $25.35 in October, up 4.9 percent from one year ago. The labor market remained a bright spot in an economy that has seen softening in other areas. Through the first 10 months of 2022, the sector hired 367,000 employees, building on the 365,000 workers added in calendar year 2021 and the most so far of any year since 1994. Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 261,000 in October, and the U.S. economy has added 4,068,000 new employees year to date. The unemployment rate ticked up to 3.7 percent in October, with the labor force participation rate declining for the second straight month, edging down to 62.2 percent. There were 806,000 manufacturing job openings in September, averaging 853,000 over the past 12 months, remaining well above pre-pandemic levels. Nonfarm busi- ness job openings totaled 10,717,000 in September, which translated into 53.7 unemployed workers for every 100 job openings in the U.S. economy. There continues to be more job openings than people actively looking for work. Meanwhile, manufacturing activity stalled, with the ISM Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index dropping to 50.2 in October, the lowest reading since May 2020. New orders contracted for the second straight month, and ex- ports deteriorated further. On the other hand, production strengthened somewhat, with hiring stabilizing after falling in the prior survey. More encouragingly, the index for supplier deliveries re- flected faster growth for the first time since February 2016, which indicates that the long wait times that have become prevalent over the past year have started to wane. None- theless, customer inventories remained too low. Manufacturing activity declined for the sixth straight month in the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank’s district. The sample comments noted the softening of business condi- tions, along with ongoing challenges with inflation, work- force shortages and economic and political uncertainties. Respondents remained negative in their outlook. New orders for manufactured goods rose 0.3 percent in September, but excluding transportation equipment, new factory orders edged down 0.1 percent. Core capital goods orders—a proxy for capital spending in the U.S. economy— pulled back 0.4 percent from a record high in the previous month. The factory orders data are consistent with some stalling in manufacturing demand since the summer.

American Box Forms New Division To Promote Zero Waste Initiatives Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based American Box has an- nounced the introduction of its new division, Impact Re- cycling Partners, to further their mission to help orga- nizations give materials a second life. This milestone
While American Box aims to upcycle used materials efficiently, Impact Recycling Partners focuses on helping organizations implement new material and waste manage- ment methods. Impact Recycling Partners amplifies Amer- ican Box’s message of environmental responsibility, which comes after American Box’s substantial strides in sustain- ability practices since 1956 but specifically highlights ef- forts from the past decade, including: • Generating $27 million in revenue for clients from con- version efforts • Giving 139 million cardboard boxes a second life • Diverting 38,000 tons of mixed plastics from landfills “We got our start helping local companies give corru- gated shipping boxes a second life through a reuse pro- gram that was very much ahead of its time,” said Brandon Spradlin, President of American Box. “Today, we are fo- cused on inspiring organizations to break the status quo when it comes to their waste and recycling programs.” As the demand for widespread, innovative recycling programs continues to increase, Impact Recycling Part- ners is working to create value for organizations, em- ployees, and stakeholders. American Box developed the new brand to optimize the circular economy by providing businesses with tailored zero waste improvement plans. Their efforts to refine commercial recycling and waste management processes is aimed at using resources more efficiently and turning waste into income streams. Visit https://irp.earth to learn more.

a Control-Based Approach as we’re discussing Tuesday’s incident?” The more you label it, the more you’ll be aware of it, and the less you’ll be stuck in it. When ready, propose the alternative – the Learning-Based Approach. How? Af- ter the next incident or unwanted error, don’t start by ask- ing, “What went wrong this time?” Instead, start by asking, “How do you all get this job get done right 99 percent of the time?” 2) Create Psychological Safety : It’s easy to destroy and challenging to create. Yet research from Dr. Amy Edmon- son at Harvard and Google’s Project Aristotle reveal that Psychological Safety is key to successful, safe, engaged, and reliable teams. After an error, instead of saying, ”Joe failed to do [X]...” ask, “What DID Joe do, and why did it make sense for him (at the time) to do that?” 3) Lead After Action Reviews (AARS ): For over 30 years, these psychologically safe, semi-structured, post-job team debriefs have been used by an increasing number of high-hazard industries worldwide. After your next suc- cessful, complex project, instead of asking, ”What could we have done better?”, ask these four questions initially developed to accelerate learning in the US Army:
4) Transform Investigations : Traditional investigations often “Name, shame, blame & retrain.” The result? Fear, silence and box-checking on Corrective Actions. The al- ternative? Instead of asking, “What was the error, and who
made it?” ask, “How did our processes set that person up to make that error? And how can we improve our process- es to set our people up for reliability and success instead?” 5) Apply Defenses : Peer Checks. Three-Step Communi- cation. Checklists. These and other simple, yet powerful

defenses have proven successful for decades. You can learn them in a few hours, and get real-world results im- mediately. Pick a job that you and your team regularly do. Consider writing or updating the checklist for that job to include ONLY the 3-7 items most often missed. One physi- cian from Baltimore helped save 1,500 lives in 18 months with this classic defense. 6) Improve Systems: Instead of trying to “fix” your workers, improve your work processes & systems. How? Pick a pro- cess that you regularly do. With trusted front-line experts, brainstorm one low-cost, low-risk, low-fear, low-mainte- nance process improvement that would make it easier for front-line experts to do the right thing in that process. For example: Companies with fleets of trucks have dramati- cally reduced serious injuries and save millions of dollars each year by simply avoiding left-hand turns. 7) Build Resilience (Advanced) : The world’s most High Re- liability Organizations (HROs) don’t try to eliminate all er- rors. They don’t “Proceduralize Everything” either. Instead, they build resilience so that most errors become easier to recover from and learn from. How do HROs do this? They look for “weak signals,” like the sound an engine makes when it’s just starting to develop a problem.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Novices miss weak signals. But experts sense them and act on them quickly to manage errors before they cascade into catastrophes. So talk with 1-2 trusted peers and identi- fy one weak signal for a complex job that you all do. Name that weak signal, and what to do about it. Then teach that to your apprentices instead of hoping that they’ll discover it on their own. If these seven steps seem like a lot, don’t worry. Just pick the one that resonates with you the most right now, and discuss it with a few trusted colleagues and when ev- eryone is ready, try it out in a low-cost, low-risk micro-ex- periment. A few small, quick wins will help you build mo- mentum fast! Jake Mazulewicz, Ph.D. shows leaders in high-hazard in- dustries why errors are signals, not failures, and how to

New Resource Helps Women Succeed In Manufacturing
To help women identify opportunities, recognize obsta- cles, and navigate a career in manufacturing, the Packag- ing & Processing Women’s Leadership Network (PPWLN), and OpX Leadership Network, teamed up to deliver the new digital work product: Connect, Share, Inspire: Voices of Women in Packaging and Processing. The annual Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) 2022 Salary Survey results, a portion of which is included in the new work product, reveal a continued gender wage gap, pointing out the need to help women succeed in manufacturing careers. The Voices of Women in Packag- ing and Processing, produced by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, highlights five core skills needed for success: business acumen,
negotiation, communication, emotional intelligence, and networking. Also included are insights from subject-mat- ter experts and perspectives from five influential women leaders in the industry. “There is so much opportunity for women in the man-
ufacturing and packaging space, yet so many obstacles still to overcome,” says Stephanie Neil, editor-in-chief of OEM mag- azine. “Whether it’s fighting for pay parity or a promotion, it’s important for women to leverage some basic skillsets that will help them maneuver this male-dominated indus- try. The collaboration between PPWLN and the OpX Leadership Network is a first step in a larger effort underway to attract more women to this field while giving them the tools to succeed.” “As a manufacturing professional with 20 plus years of experience, I’ve sometimes felt that I didn’t have control over my career path,” says Lisa Rathburn, Vice President of Engineering for T. Marzetti, who is also an executive council member of both the OpX Leadership Network and PPWLN. “I wanted to contribute to this project because I un- derstand how difficult the road can be. Hav- ing information and a network of like-mind- ed people can make a big difference in an individual’s overall experience.” The collaborative work of PPWLN, which serves to recruit, retain, and advance wom- en’s careers in packaging and processing, and the OpX Leadership Network, com- bines cross-functional knowledge and in- formation with a single goal in mind – to show how instrumental people are to the manufacturing and packaging process, and how meaningful this journey is for the wom- en who are here today—and who have yet to come aboard. The Connect, Share, Inspire: Voices of Women in Packaging and Processing work product, are available for free download at: https://www.opxleadershipnetwork.org .
