Stuart Hall MCIPPdip, Executive director, CIPP

Tell us about your career and background in payroll I first started in payroll back in the early 1980s. For twenty years’ I worked in a variety of payroll positions with major payroll providers including ADP, Data Sciences and the Bank of Scotland. In 1999 I got together with a couple of friends and we started Employer Services Ltd which grew into a large payroll provider with 46 employees. In 2009, we launched the first true cloud payroll software, PaySuite. The software was sold to Intuit (quickbooks) in 2015. A year later Employer Services was sold to Baker Tilley, now RSM. When did you first become involved with the CIPP? I was one of the first members of the British Payroll Managers Association. Tell us about your role at the CIPP I am an executive director of the board, which means I am involved in the strategic thinking and planning of the organisation; a position I find both exciting and an honour to undertake. What does being appointed to the board mean to you? Being appointed to the board is something I take very seriously. It’s a challenging position to undertake. You realise that decisions made at this level can affect not only CIPP employees, but also the valuable members who make up our organisation. Having run a large payroll bureau, I have

attended enough board meetings – and, believe me, sometimes they could be ‘bored’ meetings – but attending the CIPP meetings has a different focus, whereby I can offer more of a guiding role. What do you plan for 2018? If you mean for the CIPP, then I’m early into my role on the board, but I see 2018 being the start of something new for which I plan to listen and then listen some more to what’s happening in the world of payroll. What do you think you can bring to the future strategy of the CIPP? The future strategy of the CIPP has been foremost on my mind recently and I’d like to think that my experience in building and running companies in the world of payroll will be helpful to the CIPP. What does the future hold for the future of payroll, pensions and reward? I believe the future for payroll is ‘automation’. Sadly, many payroll software providers in the UK are woefully behind in the use of technology, which means true automation is but a dream. I think the future for payroll is about to change. What do you do in your available time to unwind? Apart from playing my trombone in the International Staff Band, I volunteer as a house guide for a National Trust property and when I need a break, my motorhome comes in very handy. n
