THE SECRET TO SUCCESS
THAT I LEARNED IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
O ct. 5 is World Teachers’ Day, and seeing that brought back a vivid, citrus memory to my mind. When my middle school science teacher showed me and my dad his orange grove, it was inspiring — not necessarily because I imagined myself growing trees back then, but because he was a farmer and a hardworking man.
Another pair of teachers that made a big impact on me were Mrs. Byrne and Mrs. Morril. They were librarians who trained me on audio and video production, and I eventually became responsible for setting up the audio and visuals —the TVs, wiring, speakers, everything — for
school assemblies. At one point, we turned one of the rooms in the school library into a newsroom circuit and set up a camera and video board there. In

addition to the technical knowledge I learned from them, Mrs. Byrne and Mrs. Morril were always encouraging me to ask questions and persevere with whatever I was doing.
That’s why I thought I’d celebrate World Teachers’ Day by talking a bit about the hardworking teachers of my middle school. They were some of the best teachers of my entire life. I still drive by my old middle school all the time and think about them and my memories there. I’ve since realized just how much of an impact they’ve had on my life.
One of the most awesome things about middle school was that I got to do so much, and the teachers held me responsible and truly trusted me. That was a great experience for me as a kid. I like to think I’ve kept up that curiosity today, despite not having middle school teachers to push me. Running a business can seem like a lonely endeavor. It isn’t like being in school where teachers show you every single step. That’s why I keep good company with podcasts and books, keep up with mentors and peers in my field, and of course, keep my hands in
When I was 11 or 12, I had a science teacher named Mr. Truby. He was one of the best teachers I’ve ever
had, and I loved his science class and developed a friendship with him. After he pulled some strings, I even became his official assistant because he needed extra help with all of the lab preparation he did. A special class period in the morning was created for me to come in and help Mr. Truby set up his classroom for the day. It was through this experience that I learned one of the many great lessons from Mr. Truby: Always take the time you need to do a good job. His work both in his orange grove and in his classroom at school really exemplified this. Mr. Truby was not only hardworking but also very nice, and I’ve never forgotten the time he took and the detail he used while teaching. It created a wonderful experience for the students in his classroom.

Great teachers give their students the guidance they need to stay focused on their goals — that’s exactly what Mr. Truby, Mrs. Byrne, and Mrs. Morril gave me. I thank them so much for everything they did for me and so many other kids. To all the teachers in these times, remember your work is so valuable.

I’ll be honest: We both might be Cavapoos, but he’s quite a bit bigger than me. But if anyone asks, I won the wrestling matches, okay? Anyway, at the end of the night, we were a little tuckered out, so we laid around talking about important subjects like the right
H ey everyone! I’m in such a great mood today. I don’t think I’ve seen any little humans sleepover since the walk-alypse began (aka when everyone was at home more and we started walking several times a day. It’s been awesome!), but I did get the chance to have a sleepover with my Cavapoo buddy, Jake. Now, I know what you’re thinking: Is that safe? Don’t worry — we played indoors! It was nice and cool; the sweltering Florida heat didn’t get to us for a second. I forgot how exciting sleepovers are. I’m calm most of the time, but when Jake is around, I want to do everything with him! That’s the thing about sleepovers — you hardly get any sleep. Jake and I ate dinner, then wrestled around the sofa, wrestled in the kitchen, then played tag while running around the house.
place to bury a bone. Do we pick the spot where humans traverse the most? Or is the isolated spot behind the fountain better? What will be the social consequences of storing our treasures there? Typical dog stuff. Jake and I stayed up for hours! I try to talk to the small humans about these things, but they never understand. Sometimes, it’s just really nice to connect with someone who worries about the same things I do. Especially when you stay up all night! That’s the best. Maybe not for the family; eventually, Jake and I passed out in our cages, side by side. Jake actually lives in the same cul-de-sac as us, so every time we walk past his house, I try to go say hi! Of course, Dad or Mom don’t always have the time to visit, but when they do, it’s always super fun! It’s also nice having a bigger friend on the block. Any bullies are going to have to have a word with Jake, and honestly, that’s totally cool with me. He would knock them out in a second.
Friends are the best, right? We should be friends too! See you next time!

5 STEPS TO A SAFER HOTEL ROOM Keep Strangers and Viruses Out With These Quick Tips
S taying home is the best way to protect yourself and your family from illness, but sometimes life gets in the way. Maybe you need to travel for work, to help a relative, or just to keep your kids from bouncing off the walls. If you have a hotel stay on the books, worrying about safety is understandable. But by taking these precautions, you can protect your loved ones and increase your odds of coming home healthy. 1. Bring a sanitation kit and use it! Most hotels are going above and beyond to sanitize their rooms these days, but it never hurts to take extra care. Before you check in, pick up cleaning supplies like disinfectant spray, wipes, plastic bags, and gloves. Then, use them to wipe down your room. Focus on big surfaces as well as features like faucet handles, doorknobs, lightswitches, and microwave buttons. 2. Skip the decorative linens. Many hotels don’t wash decorative bedding like comforters and fancy pillowcases. To be extra safe, strip these off the bed and wash your hands afterward. If you’re chilly, opt for the hotel’s spare blanket (it’s probably hiding in a closet) or bring one from home.
3. Quarantine your remote control. As USA Today puts it, “It’s common knowledge that one of the germiest items in a hotel room is the remote control.” To avoid the ick, pick up the remote while wearing gloves and drop it into a Ziploc. Then, remove your gloves and seal the bag. Now you can use the remote without touching it directly! 4. Invest in a rubber door wedge. Viruses aren’t the only risk in hotel rooms — break-ins are another concern. To keep your room secure, bring a rubber door wedge. They cost less than $10 on Amazon and make kicking in a door much more difficult. 5. For maximum security, bring a door alarm. Simple travel alarms hang from the handle of a door and have two prongs that slide between the door and its frame. When the door opens and the prongs separate, that triggers the alarm.
