LEADERSHIP Executive Principal’s Prize-giving Address

It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you all to this special occasion, as we gather in this magnificent setting to celebrate the achievements of our boys. I am deeply humbled and honoured to have the opportunity to speak to you as a community for the first time. First, I would like to acknowledge our Bishop, The Right Reverend Dr Peter Carrell, our Board Chair, Hugh Lindo, the members of the Board, our dedicated staff, the Old Boys among us, and, most importantly, the boys of Christ’s College. I also want to extend a warm acknowledgment to the parents, grandparents, and extended families present today. This is an important occasion for all of you as well. For the parents of our Year 13 students, I imagine that one of the thoughts on your mind this afternoon is just how quickly the years have passed; how it feels like only yesterday that your sons were walking through the gates of Christ’s College as Year 9s. As a parent myself, I know how swiftly time can fly. However, today, let us pause, reflect, and take pride in how far our boys have come. Today, we should all feel immensely proud of them. I would like to begin by thanking each and every one of you for the role you have played in making 2024 such a successful year. We are a community, and our strength lies in our ability to work together to create an environment where our boys can truly thrive. I am grateful for your involvement and support. This afternoon is, of course, a time to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our boys. However, it is also an opportunity to reflect on broader matters that are of great importance to our College community, particularly the challenges facing our education sector today. If we were to take a snapshot of education in our country today, it would be understandable to feel a sense of concern. Our national education system, regrettably, continues to lose its academic rigour, year after year. By nearly every

measure, the quality of education in this country is in decline. The very system we wish to champion as a pillar of excellence is, in fact, falling short of that ideal. National performance in literacy and numeracy now trails international benchmarks, and with each release of global test results, we see further evidence of this troubling downward trend. There are undeniable systemic failures within our education system. If these issues are not addressed, they will prevent many of our students from reaching their full potential. Despite ongoing rhetoric surrounding equity in education, we are witnessing an alarming widening of disparities in educational outcomes. So, what role does Christ’s College play in this landscape? What responsibility do we have as part of the national education system? I believe we have a duty to act as a beacon of hope – a lighthouse in this fog. We must bring our voice and influence to the table. Because, despite the challenges we see nationally, here at Christ’s College we are defying the trend. Our academic achievement and the success of our students in co- curricular pursuits remain among the best in the country. Why? Because

we have a clear and unwavering belief in what constitutes an outstanding education and what excellence in teaching and learning looks like. With an evidence-based approach, we are determined to continue relentlessly pursuing this vision. When we think about how best to deliver on our mission of creating an environment in which each boy can be his best, we know that this must be achieved through intentional, high-quality teaching by specialist teachers. A strong academic foundation requires innovating with the application of student learning in a broad range of contexts in which core subject knowledge is still the foundation. It is a space where critical thinking, debate, and academic discourse are encouraged and nurtured. It is an environment in which our Anglican faith shapes and cultivates young men of virtuous character – young men who are motivated to serve their communities, who are unapologetically aspirational yet grounded in humility. It is an environment in which we foster a positive, competitive school culture in which boys are encouraged to pursue personal excellence in all its forms, to develop their strengths,

and to seek new challenges, because it is the application of their knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will distinguish our boys and, ultimately, prepare them to be contributing members of society in an increasingly competitive and rapidly evolving world of work. Today more than ever, we understand how the brain works, how social and emotional experiences can impact on learning, and how technology can enable learning. Our aspiration is that our boys will choose more, learn more, and be better prepared for their futures. We want them to feel more connected to our College than ever before.

Mr Lindo, on behalf of the entire College community, we thank you for your outstanding service. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in showing your appreciation for Hugh Lindo. I would also like to thank our extraordinary staff here at College. Their dedication to providing the best possible opportunities and experiences for our boys is truly remarkable. Great staff make all the difference, and I feel privileged to work alongside such a passionate and hardworking team. You will not find a more committed group. I ask you all to join me in showing our appreciation for their tireless efforts. Finally, to our Year 13 boys, the Class of 2024 – thank you for the significant contributions you have made to Christ’s College over the past five years. My greatest hope for each of you is that when you leave College, you will do so with confidence in who you are and in your ability to have a positive impact on the world around you. Wherever life takes you, you will always have a home at Christ’s College. You are about to enter a world that is complex and full of challenges, but it is my conviction that you will face those challenges with courage, grace, and dignity. On behalf of the staff, we wish you all the very best in the next chapter of your lives, with all our love and respect. Joe Eccleton Executive Principal

challenging financial times and an unstable educational climate. You may also be aware that our Board Chair, Hugh Lindo, will step down from his position at the end of this academic year. If ever there was a definition of the ultimate College man, it would be Mr Lindo. He is an Old Boy, a past parent, a former president of the Old Boys’ Association, a Fellow of the Board, and, most recently, our Board Chair. His commitment to Christ’s College has been unwavering, and we have been incredibly fortunate to benefit from his leadership.

Our aspiration is that Christ’s College will be the school that sets the benchmark for educational success in this country – and we should be unapologetically ambitious in pursuing this goal. Before I conclude, I would like to extend my thanks to our Board of Governors. Our school is fortunate to be overseen by a highly professional group of people who generously donate their time and expertise. Their specialist skills and experience have enabled Christ’s College to meet its governance responsibilities and navigate

LEADERSHIP The Chair, Prize-giving Speech

This time last year we farewelled Rob Donaldson after 35 years and then, in July, we said goodbye to Garth Wynne, who, in his eight-and-a-half years as Executive Principal, changed College in a way that was truly transformational. His contribution to College was fittingly acknowledged in a series of celebratory farewell functions in the middle of the year as he headed off to his role with the Round Square organisation. Before Garth left, we had appointed Joe Eccleton, and it was great to welcome Joe and Shelley and their daughters, Sophie and Millie, to College at the beginning of the term. Joe’s poˉwhiri was an extremely moving event as he was farewelled by Cashmere High School and welcomed to College. He has had a fast start, and you will be looking forward to hearing from him very shortly. From the Board’s perspective, we were delighted to secure Joe, and we know that the day-to-day operations of College could not be in better hands. At this point, I want to acknowledge Gillian Simpson, who stepped down from the Board to look after the staff and students as the Acting Executive Principal for Term 3, and, in so doing, becoming the first female to have led our College. We were blessed to be able to call on such an experienced and caring educator to stand-in for that term. Thanks as well are due to Dave Simpson for his support of Gillian during that period. You are quite a team. Sadly, Joe’s first day at College, and just before this term started, was the same day that our much loved and respected Flower’s House Matron, Karen Adams, died suddenly. This was a terrible blow to her family, friends, and the Flower’s House and wider College community. She had been in her role for 15 years, a second mum to the boys who passed through the House during her time there. She was caring and committed to the health and wellbeing of the boys. Her passing was a shock for everyone. Her memory will live long in the hearts and minds of all those who knew her.

I also wanted to acknowledge the passing during the year of two former and long-serving members of staff. John Boardman, a member of the English Department, a former Housemaster of Julius House, hockey coach and violinist in the College orchestra and in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, where he played on this stage numerous times. We also lost the irrepressible Richard Bromley, a College Old Boy, former head of Biology, Housemaster of School House, 1st XI cricket coach, Senior Master, Deputy Headmaster, and, for a period, Acting Headmaster and a man who simply had Christ’s College running through his veins. They will be missed but not forgotten. The governance of College continued to evolve in 2024. Richard Rookes stepped down from the Board during the year and we were joined by Amanda Johnston. We thank Richard for his forthright contribution and commitment and it is great to have Amanda on board. The Board also has access to the skills of those who have volunteered their time as co-opted members of our sub- committees. We are grateful to Simon Botherway and Johnny Cochrane for their stewardship of our Foundation and to Amy Liu for her work on our Finance sub-committee. We are confident the Board is well positioned to set the next iteration of our strategy for 2025 to 2030 to ensure Christ’s College continues to deliver leading academic and co-curricular programmes to our students. The Board is deeply conscious of the impact of another large increase in our fees. Our cost structure reflects the diversity of the programmes that we offer and the reality of the need for continued maintenance, and reinvestment in our heritage campus. The Board has a determined focus on achieving the financial freedom to continue the investment we need to make in the years ahead. We sincerely appreciate the ongoing support of our parent community. It is very much appreciated. The College community is far reaching. It is not just the current

boys and their parents, but extends to all those who feel a connection with College irrespective of how and when those connections were formed. We have seen the engagement of that community and the affirmation of those connections in the myriad functions and events that are run by and through College. The 175th anniversary events in February next year are well set to be a great celebration of those connections. To Joe and all our staff, thank you for your efforts in 2024. The Board wishes you a long, well-deserved, and restful summer. To the Year 13s who have had to listen to me speaking at this event for each of the past five years but never again, thank you for your patience but, more importantly, for your contribution to College during your time with us. May your futures be blessed as you leave this place. Finally, to my colleagues on the Board, thank you for your contribution to the governance of College. Thank you also to Mel Murrell and Rob McFarlane for their help in supporting the Board. To my successor, Jeremy Johnson, who takes over next week, and our new Deputy Chair, Gillian Simpson, all the best. College is in good hands. To finish where I started. To all of you here today, the boys, your parents, our staff and governors, and our Old Boys ... This is your College … Louder Still! Thank you. Nga¯ mihi. Hugh Lindo Chair

of a tradition that was, at the time, controversially not maintained by reading (not singing) the first verse and chorus of the College song with a hope of a revival at the 175th events in February. “Come, all ye College boys, sing lustily, I pray, And recollect your battle cry, and ring it out today, Upraising, with a mighty sound of hip-hip-hooray, Your College! College! Louder Still. As in days that have gone before us, So, in seasons now before us, ‘College!’ Shout we all in chorus, With a hip-hip-hip hurrah.” While appreciating the language is reflective of a bygone age, some of the values and themes embedded in the verses of the song remain as relevant in 2024 as they did when the song was written in 1886 – collegiality, a coming together, pride, passion, teamwork, effort, friendship, commitment, and community. When the song was sung at a full school Chapel or Assembly, it was quite a thing… Anyway, please forgive a little bit of

shameless nostalgia. Nau mai, haere mai

E te manuhiri tuarangi, Haere mai moˉ te¯nei hui, moˉ te¯nei kaupapa oˉ te ra¯ Noˉ reira, te¯na¯ koutou, te¯na¯ koutou

As we were singing our national anthem, I was reflecting on what a great Carol Service we had last night. On behalf of all who attended, I wanted to thank Cameron Pickering, Robert Aburn, and the choir for putting together such a special service. Continuing on a musical theme, in years gone by these events would

have included a stirring rendition of the College song that was simply entitled College . As we approach our 175th celebrations in 2025 and consider our motto, ‘Bene Tradita, Bene Servanda’, ‘good traditions, well maintained’, I thought it was worth reminding the Old Boys among us and enlightening the current boys

Te¯na¯ koutou katoa Welcome, welcome, Visitors from afar Welcome to this meeting, To the important discussion of the day, Therefore, greeting, greetings.

you’ll encounter more than enough of those people throughout your lives. What I mean is that you can never truly appreciate the beauty of your surroundings and love those around you if you can’t genuinely appreciate and love yourself. I can attest to this with my experience in my role this year and as a College student over the past three years. While it hasn’t always been the easiest to believe in myself, the support and confidence I’ve gained from others has been invaluable in helping me become the person I am today and I will forever be grateful for their contributions. First, I’d like to thank Mr Matt Cortesi and Mr Keri Campbell for their guidance and wisdom, my fellow Year 13s, who have been through their journeys alongside me and with whom I have found many lifelong friends, and my Prefects, who have fulfilled their duties admirably, showing up on even the

harshest mornings for our 7.45am meetings, leading by example around the school, and excelling in their respective committees and Houses with their innovative ideas. To my Deputy, Albie Roberts, mate, it’s been a heck of a year. I’ve tried my hardest but I know I haven’t been the best partner at times, but, regardless, using your attributes and your warm and charismatic personality you have shone brightly, not only as a leader, but as an awesome friend. Without the tireless work you have put in, I would not be able to stand up here today and say that we’ve done a pretty good job. To Dr Michael Field, ‘Fieldo’, the mana you have displayed not only to me but to all of us Julius lads is why Julius House is the safe and welcoming environment it is, allowing boys like myself to grow into well-rounded individuals under your wing as our mentor (another reason why Julius is the best House

at College). Sir, I wish you all the best in your future ventures in Kenya as you continue to nurture young people as you have here for the past seven-and-a-half years. Last, to my family, more specifically my parents. Mum, Dad, I know there have been times when I’m first out of the house and last back in, and when we do get to see each other and you ask me about my day, I’m always moody, tired, hungry and/or complaining about something that’s happened at school. However, 17 years later, after all we’ve been through, you are both always the first ones in my corner. I love you guys. As I take off my korowai and hand over the responsibilities of this school to our future leaders, Ihaka, Aaron, and Harrison, I want them to know that they have my full support and trust as they take this College to new heights coming into its 175th year. I would now like to invite Ihaka up to the stage. Ihaka, you have been picked for this role for all the right reasons. Use the skills and the character you possess to flourish in your role next year. Just remember: “O le tele o sulu e maua ai figota.” Through collaboration, the most difficult challenges can be overcome. Our strength does not come from us alone but from many. To conclude, one final message to all. Your life, at the end of the day, is what you make it. As the one and only Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”. So, give yourselves as many chances as possible to succeed, while still enjoying every minute as they come and go, as it will all be done before you know it. I will be forever thankful for this wonderful opportunity and will cherish the memories that have come with it. And with that, for one last time, PTTP. Zinzan Bondarenko-Leatua Head Prefect 2024

Now one may think, with the number of speeches I’ve given this year, writing this one was a walk in the park. Well, surprisingly, this was not the case. This isn’t just another one of those Assembly speeches where I (quote from another College student) “yap about some random stuff on stage for a couple of minutes”. Instead, I have to try and encapsulate the learnings and experiences I’ve obtained as a part of this Christ’s College family, while still trying to keep it at an acceptable length. I’ll give it a go. I’ve spoken on various topics throughout this year, with some messages being more ‘interesting’ than others. I mean, who could blame me? It’s not the easiest job keeping a group of teenage boys and all the staff awake on a Thursday morning. However, I’ve learnt, from being on both sides of a lectern, that the best messages and pieces of advice usually, aren’t much longer than a sentence. So here’s mine – a two-word question followed by a one-word answer. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing or when, but ask yourself, ‘Who cares?’ The answer should be ‘you’. See, we frequently get so caught up in the midst of other people’s opinions and judgements and the looming pressures of assignments, work, and external factors that we end up losing track of why we do the things we do, typically leading us to burn out, as we run ourselves into the ground trying to please everyone and everything. Now, boys, I’m not saying that you should stick your noses out and let your arrogance run free. Trust me,

Te¯na¯ koutou katoa Ko Aoraki te maunga Ko Oˉ takaro te awa

journeys we have had over this year, and, for some of us, a final reflection on an odyssey now coming to its closing credits. Every year our College community continues to thrive; if anything, I doubt that statement will ever be false. Some special moments showcasing this come to mind. Our Senior A Basketball team winning its second national title in three years, two incredible school productions, Anything Goes and Puffs , a record- breaking 11 Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and 35 NZQA Academic Scholarships, four of which were at the Outstanding level, let alone all of the achievements and celebrations you will see today.

I want to start by welcoming all the students, staff, wha¯nau, and friends to this year’s prize-giving. This event is the perfect occasion to celebrate the successes of those we care about and look back on the

LEADERSHIP Governing Body

In 2024, there were significant leadership changes at College. In addition to the departure of

In July 2024, Richard Rookes retired from the Board. After an open recruitment process, Amanda Johnston, who has a strong corporate and governance background, was appointed to replace him. At the same time, the Board appointed Angus McKenzie, a New York-based Old Boy working for EY in strategy, change management, culture, and talent services, as a Board intern. With the departure of Mr Wynne, the Board focus was on the recruitment of his replacement and the appointment of Gillian Simpson as Interim Executive Principal during Term 3. This took significant time during Term 1 and Term 2. The Board was also focussed on preparations for College’s 175th Anniversary in 2025.

In addition, the Board, working with the Foundation Committee, reviewed the College Foundation’s investment strategy and moved it towards a strategy with a 100- year horizon and a low-fee base. The Board is extremely grateful for the work done by Foundation Committee Chair Johnny Cochrane and independent committee member Simon Botherway. The Advancement Committee, with support from the Board, also worked to develop a campaign focussed on support for scholarships. It will be the focus of Giving Day 2025. Finally, in 2024, Upper West – a project that took nearly a decade to come to completion – was opened.

Garth Wynne and the arrival of Joe Eccleton in December 2024, Hugh Lindo retired after 11 years on the Board, including five years as Chair. Mr Lindo was Chair during significant events in College’s history, including the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care and the Covid-19 pandemic. College thanks Mr Lindo for his tireless work and service. Mr Lindo was succeeded as Chair by Jeremy Johnson, with Gillian Simpson becoming Deputy Chair. College’s Director of Finance & Operations, Rob McFarlane, also advised of his intention to leave at the beginning of 2025. The Board is grateful to Mr McFarlane for his hard work and professional approach throughout his time with College.
