Cathedral School for Boys Faculty and Staff Handbook 2017-18

Workers Compensation The Cathedral School for Boys provides Workers’ Compensation Insurance. This program covers injuries and illnesses that are sustained in the course of employment and that require medical, surgical, or hospital treatment. It is the employee’s responsibility to report any and all injuries to the administration as soon as they occur.

Faculty Absences

For teachers, CSB provides ten days of sick leave, of which two may be taken as personal days. Sick leave may be used for absences when the employee or employee’s family member is ill, and for medical appointments for diagnosis, treatment and/or preventative care. Sick leave is also available for employees who are absent from work because they or a family member is the victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. For purposes of this policy, a “family member” includes the employee’s child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, registered domestic partner, or a designated person if the employee has no spouse or registered domestic partner. Teachers are asked not to schedule personal days either immediately before or after a school vacation, nor on days when their presence is especially needed, such as field trip days, student council fair, etc., unless cleared by the appropriate Division Director. Additional absences are unpaid, unless other arrangements have been made with the Headmaster. Sick leave may be accrued up to a maximum of 30 days, at which time accruals cease. Unused sick leave will not be paid if a teacher leaves the employment of Cathedral School for Boys. Staff members are asked to schedule appointments outside of school hours whenever possible. If a teacher will not be at school due to illness, the teacher or assistant must notify the Division Director as soon as possible and in any case no later than 6:30 a.m. Teachers are also expected to provide substitutes with a current lesson plan for the day of absence. All teachers are expected to let the front desk know if they are going to be off campus, whether for sick leave, for later arrivals or early departures, or for personal or professional errands.

Professional Development and Evaluation

Funds are available for faculty professional development including classes, conferences, or workshops. Requests should be submitted to the Division Director for approval. At times, division directors, the Headmaster or other senior administrators may request or expect staff members to participate in certain professional development opportunities as a condition of employment or remaining employed.
