mechanically compacted, so that was one of the largest challenges facing this project. Following significant exploration and testing by Earth Engineering, the Developer and tenants were comfortable with the ability to create a stable foundation for the future buildings. The site also required rather not-so-com- mon approvals, such as a landfill closure approval from DEP, Act 2 coverage approval fromDEP, a Joint 105 permit to reconstruct a stream that had collapsed in 1972 (during HurricaneAgnes), another Joint 105 permit to cross Naylor’s Run Creek, an Individual NPDES permit and two Letters of Map Revision (LOMR’s) from FEMA. Finally, a pre-cast arch bridge system is being constructed to allow a connection from the shopping center via Kohl’s access to West Chester Pike. This connection will benefit both centers, as well as the public, as it will provide an alternate means of access from Township Line Road (Route 1) to West Chester Pike (Route 3). Two new Septa bus shelters are also being constructed. n

uarry Center LP, the owners of the former Llanerch Quarry in Haverford, are re-developing the site with a shopping center. The center will feature a 120,000 s/f Lowes Home Improvement Store and an 82,000 s/f. Giant Supermarket along with outparcels and in-line re- tail which will include Panera Bread, Chipotle, Visionworks and SuperCuts. The 30-acre site was used as a granite quarry from the late 1800s until 1972, when Hurricane Agnes flooded the 285-foot deep quarry. The quarry was never reopened, but became a clean landfill in the early 1980s, which continued until the 7.3 million cubic yard hole was filled in 2010. The Quarry Center

The shopping center devel- opment will feature a con- nection via arch span across Naylors Run, which will connect the site to West Chester Pike through an existing access to the Kohl’s store on the other side of the stream. The site will also include amenities such as parking, landscaping, lighting, underground infiltration basins, rain gardens, and landscape berms along the western and northern property boundaries as a screen for adjacent resi-

dences. Construction began in Spring of 2012. Giant and Lowe’s are anticipated to celebrate Grand Opening in Spring 2013. What makes this Project/ Job your favorite or most unique? There are several aspects to this project that make it unique. First, the site was formerly a quarry, which was filled in over a span of about 30 years from a depth of 285 feet. In addition, the fill within the quarry was never
