Executive Women in Business Debbie Pomerantz, Gebroe-Hammer Associates Embrace the unique attributes a woman brings to commercial real estate brokerage
ing when to say yes, when to be assertive and when to back off. Of course, refined interpersonal and relationship-building skills – along with a great deal of patience – go a long way. She also notes that it is absolutely necessary to be organized and set new goals that inspire you each and every day. What challenges and or obstacles do you feel you needed to overcome to be- come as successful as you are today? As a brokerage professional, Pomerantz has been challenged with delegating some of the responsibilities associated with marketing a property and clos- ing a transaction. Feeling a
tremendous sense of personal ownership, she has learned to tap into the talents of the firm’s management team. Pomerantz recognizes each person brings something different to the table and usually can complete cer- tain tasks far more efficiently. She also has realized this helps with her own time management as well as increasing her deal- closing levels. What was the most defining moment for you as a woman in the profession you are currently in? Commercial real estate broker- age has traditionally been, and in some respects remains, a male-dominated field. Although this never intimidated Pomer-
antz, she did have frequent “reality-check moments” each time she walked into a room full of men at the onset of her career. When she first started, she was the sole female in her department, which motivated her to do her job even better. Do you feel being a woman is an advantage in today’s business world? Why? Why not? Pomerantz embraces the unique attributes a woman brings to commercial real estate brokerage. She feels certain societal conditions actually help her in her career. It has been her experience that, in general, people have more difficulty say- continued on page 9D

What unique qualities and or personality do you feel makes you most successful in your profession? Pomerantz attributes her success to a proven ability to exercise discretion – recogniz-
sion you are in, about your current position and why you chose the field/profes- sion you are in today? Several years ago, a real estate brokerage professional, who was an acquaintance, intro- duced the idea of joining the commercial real estate field to Pomerantz. Among the ben- efits presented to Pomerantz, a very busy mother of five, was the opportunity to complete a relatively short formal train- ing program, earn her license and gain front-line experience. Upon completion of her studies, she was immediately hired by her instructor, who was with a New York-based investment firm. Pomerantz would walk her children to school, commute on a train to work and return home in the evening to be with her family. Pomerantz’s tenacity, interpersonal skills and depth of market knowledge served as the foundation for rapid career growth Then, after meeting with several commercial bro- kerage firms in 2011, she chose Gebroe-Hammer and joined as a Sales Representative, with a focus on Northern New Jersey’s Bergen and Passaic counties. Since joining the Livingston, N.J.-based firm, which special- izes in multi-family investment sales, as well as mixed-use and free-standing office and retail properties, Pomerantz has closed on 412 units netting $31.505 million in sales. What were some of your early goals and did anything happen in your career /pro- fession to change them? Pomerantz is doing exactly what she set out to accomplish in her career. Never accept- ing the word “no,” she perse- vered and remained focused on achieving her own benchmarks, from sales volume to a work/ family balance. By eliminating distractions, which can derail one’s plans, Pomerantz believed – and continues to believe – that a genuine love of one’s work leads to both professional suc- cess and personal happiness.
