The Estates and Facilities Directorate is respon- sible for planning, creating and operating the University’s Estate, Facilities, Capital Develop- ment and Commercial Services. The Queen Mary University of London Estate currently pro- vides over 230,000M2 of academic and resi- dential accommodation on three main campus- es at Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square, with further property holdings at West Smithfield, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Departmental W, Ilford Medical School and Sports Grounds in Chislehurst. The Estate needs to support the University’s standing as an ambitious and re- search-intensive Russell Group institution and contains a wide range of research, teaching and learning facilities in addition to student residences and recreational space. The Queen Mary 2030 Strategy sets out an ambitious growth vision for the next 10 years. The strategy is underpinned by a suite of en- abling plans. The Infrastructure enabling plan combines the direction of travel for both the Physical and Digital Estate. The joint investment programme (endorsed by the Senior Executive Team and the Finance & Investment Commit- tee) is in excess of £800m. Queen Mary University of London ambition is to establish itself as a globally significant “Re- search Goliath” by 2030. To this end, the total number of global students will double over this period. London campus-based students will in- crease to over 30,000 students from the cur- rent level of 26,000. Research income is set to triple over the same period.

Job purpose

The Assistant Director – Engineering and Es- tates Maintenance is a key leadership position in the development, upkeep and servicing of the University Estate. The fundamental purpose of the role is to manage and service the University Estate and ensure it is safe, compliant, resilient, efficient, well maintained and presents as an attractive campus environment for the benefit of our stu- dents, staff colleagues and visitors. The post holder will be responsible for defining, executing and monitoring a number of busi- ness- critical enabling strategies including: • Campus Infrastructure Master-planning • University wide Technical Leadership/ co-ordination • Long-term Maintenance Programme. • Energy reduction • De-carbonisation of the London campuses • Fire safety Management • Campus Hard Services & Maintenance The role holder will be accountable for the op- erational leadership of Hard Services including the delivery of physical Environmental Sustain- ability solutions. The role holder will be able to demonstrate continual improvement across their service lines through structured reporting of progress against Key Performance Indica- tors. The role holder will evidence a passion for achieving results through harnessing talent. It is important to develop the internal technical capability of the operations team.
