Sacramento, CA project Crocker Village – Alley Row Collection sparked a collective emotional outpouring of joy among judges this year. The lines, massing, and holistic effect struck one and all as an aesthetic first-and-foremost none could have predicted from a 2,129 square foot home on a 40-foot alley loaded lot. The phrasing of intent – “to balance classic architecture that blends well with surrounding neighborhoods while offering modern experiences” – sounds straightforward, but to look at it and feel its freshness, gives its Spanish elevation style a whole new realm of meaning. The elevation’s total embrace of its old-world reference breathes the kind of bold freshness the category sorely needs. So well executed here indoors are an urban-livability vibe achieved by lengthened sight lines that feed light, openness and flow across its purposeful zones that avail of a circulation spine that graciously parses out space. Beautifully, unabashedly different.
