BEST DESIGN FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY
BEST DESIGN FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Leveraging energy reduction strategies, this project was designed to advance the cutting edge of sustainable school design and is expected to be Net Zero Energy. The Environmental Center will use no natural gas and is projected to be Net Zero Carbon. To address storm water management challenges on the campus and to reduce potable water use in the process, rainwater captured by the building roofs will be harvested, stored in large underground cisterns, and then used for toilet flushing. Rainwater harvesting combined with ultra-low flow plumbing fixtures, drought tolerant landscaping and drip irrigation is projected to reduce potable water use by over 70% from baseline. Harnessing natural breezes creates a healthy indoor environment, significantly reducing the need for air conditioning, and conserves energy.
Radiant in-floor heating, combined with simple Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) systems provides excellent thermal comfort and filtered fresh air to all spaces, recycling interior waste heat in the process. Filtered natural light, coupled with advanced, energy- efficient lighting with daylight dimming controls will further conserve energy. Photovoltaic arrays on the roofs of the new buildings will provide up to 100% of electrical power and the daily renewable energy contribution will be demonstrated to students. Building materials utilized high recycled / renewable content, such as formaldehyde-free insulation, linoleum, carpet, and aluminum. Non-toxic materials used to create excellent indoor air quality included formaldehyde-free wood products, vinyl-free carpets and non-toxic paints and adhesives. The school is currently projected to achieve Platinum Certification in the USGBC’s LEED for School’s program.
