Judges comments: Once home to a major bank and commercial building, the Santa Ana Arts Collective is an adaptive reuse residential community to local artists. Judges were captivated with the preservation and transformation of the building’s mid-century architecture by adding a modern contemporary flair. The restoration of the ribbon windows allows natural light for the resident artist. As the first redevelopment under the city’s new adaptive reuse ordinance, it is deserving of the grand award for the repurposing of a 1965 international style office building into 100% affordable live-work lofts and townhomes, while converting underused surface parking to a lush garden and open space.
