The 20-townhome cluster of Everett Commons, at the corner of Everett Street and Eagle Avenue, in East Bay’s Alameda, CA, draws deep, unabashed inspiration from the immediate vicinity’s Victorian-era soul. Too, the community, which serves residents who earn incomes of 20% to 60% of area median incomes, instantaneously passed our judges’ sniff-test for this competitive category in a unanimous – “this doesn’t look like affordable housing” – assessment. It’s understated bow to history and highly-integrated design blend timelessness and “modern-sensibility” character traits in equal measures. Along the street, porches and stoops with varied door colors open onto the sidewalk facing Everett, while the interior circulation spin connects semi-private patio spaces at each unit to larger patios and a greenway knoll.
